Yes I feel really mislead there by NV3, I seem to remember them distinctly saying pre TANE launch (hence my buying a pre-launch copy) that most of the key Trainz add-ons would be compatible with the T-ANE when it came out. So I also bought the various main official historic Trainz DLC. Just to find out when I got TANE all this content was non compatible after all. They aslo when I put trust in their Kickstarter project, didn't mention there would be two versions of TANE. A steam and a non-Steam version. So now I'm stuck with a non Steam variant of the game. And yes my experience of the Content Manager system has been terrible. Things just don't seem to work, and for no apparent reason. Plus support for the game seems to be non-existent, with a very hostile community. So I soon gave up, and came back to my 'beloved' trains. And I'm so glad I did!
When I was exploring Trainz/Tane (kickstarter) it was at a time when TS was going through a pretty torrid time i.e. soon after the launch of TS2015. The game I had loved TS2013/14 was no more, and I was having so much trouble with so many aspects of running RailWorks. Fortunately now everything (well most things) seem to be nicely back on track. :)
Yes, i bought TANE but doesn't mean i'm not going to buy TS2016 either when released as i stated in a reply i'd probably end up just buying both and seeing for myself. Everyone has differing opinions on which sim is better i've read opinions on both. YOu may think it is sad i went with TANE first but i don't think so supporting competition is a good thing in the end for both TANE and TS20xx. I also from opinions i've read see much more potential in TANE, than i currently do with TS20xx as it is now.
you will also have this issue with TS20xx with the unreal engine 4 version is released. old TS content will not work with the new TS engine either. It is a simple fact changing engines usually means starting over. In my case i have a chance to start fresh in both sims without the worry of spending a ton of money on addons or whatever just to not have them work a year or so down the road.
you may be correct, wouldn't be the first time i've contradicted myself. I know the driving aspects of TS20xx is better than trainz but i was looking for an over all railroad experience.
My perfect sim would be one that has huge routes with tons of industry that you as the player and AI of course would have to keep stocked with their resources as well as trasnporting their goods. I don't like the set missions would rather it work much more like a tycoon games, if they were to combine TS and the old sidmiers railroad tycoon games together somehow as a simulation that would be perfect.
Hi, please don't get me wrong. I'm not sad for you in your choice at all. I just hope you very much enjoy the option you've gone for. I have got all the different train sims, so do base my opinion on actual playing experience rather than reviews. But just personally haven't enjoyed either Tranz or TANE, but have loved TS. However, there's no doubt about it I am very biased toward TS having invested in an awful lot of content over the years. I also have no real interest in the new train sims based on the modern graphics engines; since I've been quite amazed at the tremendous quality of content I can already play with TS2015/6. I'm probably set-up for life with content to keep me happy, and the graphics are perfectly adequate for me to fully enjoy the game.
Your comment above caught my interest. Because like you I love the Railroad Tycoon Series, and hark back to that sort of entrepreneurial rail managment game. I had hoped Train-Fever would be a good suitable replacment, but was sadly most disappointed by that. However, it did make me think that A-Train 9 v3.0 might fit the bill for you in this regard; if you haven't already come across it. Linked below:

I did buy the game in the last big Steam Sale but confess I haven't yet had the opportunity to play it. There are some very positive reviews about it, but also some find it just too detailed and rather overwhelming. I did however, find some very good YouTube tutorials that I think would really help one get going in this game, if I had the time. But certainly looks like it might have very good potential for a modern Railroad Tycoon type experience. Hope that's some help. All the best.
It is certainly a game - simplified in various ways - but brings some real sim dynamics into play, such as train speed effected by grades, block signaling, etc. I've been interested in A-Train series as well but waiting until 9.4 gets translated into english before I leap.
Well when you've had a chance to play it. We'll genuinely be most interested to hear how you get on. There are very few independent reviews. We have our regular known Run8 'troll' on the forum regularly trying to push the game. However it would be really good to see what others truely think of this alternaitve sim. Its initial expensive price combined with very much limited content (routes and locos), I believe puts many people off. Anyway hope you find it's something you enjoy. All the best.
i'll post here after i get my initial impressions, i've read some discussions about run 8 but as you said information about it is hard to come by, most information i've attained thus far is from watch youtube videos, I know they are working on a V2 of the sim but other than AI is planned for it don't know much else, current content is supposed to work with it also. I don't think the lack of routes will bother me as i'm looking for a full railroad experience, not just driving the trains, i want to learn to hump, switch, build proper trains etc and Run 8 seems to have this capability in SP or Multiplayer, the main disadvantage of SP is there is no AI train which as i said is something they are planning in the future. I've also seen mention real time weather being implemented too.
Edit: just got my download links
To compare the two games:
If you like sand box type play or want to build your own route then Trainz is the answer. Downside is not a lot of scheduled driving type scenarios available, and the database issues with T:ANE can kill your installation. TS12 is currently the best. Once the issues with T:ANE get sorted out, it will be a great game.
If you like point to point scheduled type driving (especially with passenger service), then Train Simulator is your ticket. Also, it is a no-muss no-fuss installation without a lot of the problems you encounter with Trainz. Downside is not having a ton of free stuff to download to use in your own creations.
If you have the money, get both. They each fill a niche. I plan on buying TS2016 and then later the UE4 version also.
But it is a different kind of simulator.
Good
-Sim aspects are great from having to start each engine, make sure all trains are coupled, DPU's fencing to phyics all seem top notch thus far
-Performance is great and graphics are not as bad as some are led to believe
-Shines in multiplayer mode
Bad
-lack of documentation or tutorials
-limited routes
-lack of AI so single player can be a bore once you learn the ins and outs of the sim
That is pretty much all i can say right now as i have not put too much time into each phase of the sim yet to go into detail, but so far i'm not regretting the purchase. It definately is not a sim for everyone though, first impressions i get is RUN8 will be a love or hate type of thing with none in between for most out there.
