perhaps you're using it to much? Actually it depends on the route (of the country).
In US you need to sound the horn several times. In other countries, the horn needs to sound only short and only one time.

and in some places it is only used as a warning system similar to that on cars, only to be used when really needed

Look at the whistle boards. If it has a W with an X through it. No whistle or horn.

Strange as it may seem, some locales in the US (and possibly other countries) prohibit the use of the horn. It disturbs neighbors who bought property by a railroad track and now object to the noise, somewhat like people who buy homes near airports and then object to the sound of jet engines.

In the Miami route you find many of the "Do not play the horn" signals mentioned by rwaday.
Sometimes when looking at rail fanning videos I wonder myself how difficult must be the life in those neighborhoods close to the tracks of highly transited lines.

guess they should have thought of that before buying " cheap" homes ?:steamhappy: I live near a no horn area,it's nice, but was expensive for the city and RR,like $300,000 per crossing, 3 ofcrossing total. The auto gates do mess up. It does not forbid the enginner form using the horn,if or when needed. Not sure the RR rule on it completely, but the engineer can use the horn. Sort of miss it actually,it's been part of the city for over century. Yuppies in loft apartments @ $1200 + USD per month and no lawn.:steamhappy:

All the comments have been for real world reasons so far and the truth is that TS has never included proper horn use as part of the simulation..... until very recently.

The 1950s Riviera line DOES include Whistle Points on the HUD and is the first route I have seen that does so (correct me if i'm wrong, I've not played them all!). However, all / most other routes just mention 'improper horn use' in the debrief screen to look detailed or something. Either way, you dont get actually penalised for it in game.

I know that the Florida example above there are 'quiet zones' in real life where the horn is only to be used in emergencies and here in the UK, drivers are not allowed to sound there horns at night, even when passing 'Whistle Boards'. It would be nice if there was a more expert mode of TS that took other regulations like this into account, maybe in the next one.....

UK - Network Rail:
"Apart from emergencies, drivers cannot use horns at whistleboards between 11pm and 7am"
more at:

title: "Noise and vibration from the railway"
. . . good bedtime reading!

It is rather fun to play at some of the US routes and while you follow the proper procedures at crossings, you still have that text at the end. I think my record is around 150 improper use of horn.

residents don't like noise - versus - health and safety who don't like accidents!
. . . the battle continues . . .
simonmd 12 Thg01, 2016 @ 7:35am
Do residents also object to the sounds of metal crunching and scrapping as another truck is taken out on a crossing I wonder? :p

Hah! I used to work overlooking a small shunting yard - very noisy - and sometimes the shunting got a bit overcooked leading to buffers being broken away from the line-ends (correct term?) and derailments - on one ocassion many trucks carrying lots of steel girders (may have been rails) came to a sudden stop while the steel carried on moving THROUGH the other trucks! Very noisy, very destructive!

I've always been of the opinion that if flashing lights, gates and warning sirens aren't enough to convince you that passing them is a bad idea, then adding a train sounding its horn isn't going to make any difference.

In-game comment: Most DLCs come with a PDF, which is put inside a folder I'm sure almost nobody looks. Those might / could include information on such regulations. It could also be included in the route description in the Profile / Drive somehow (maybe just allow reading that PDF).

Out of game comment: I live near a train mainline. There used to be something here, since trains were braking and often using the various horns. While my day #1 in this place has been horrible (omgomg, nuclear bomb alert - freight train passing by), I got used to it. It builds up slowly and goes away slowly, similar to my living below an airport approaching route as a kid. The horn just stands out, plus it's instant & unexpected. Well, was, as it has been walled.
