Please put forth where these dodgy items were downloaded from? I have been using third party and free add-ones for years and have yet found one to have a virus or malware attached. I also train corporations and government agencies in cyber-security so am very familiar with the threat. There are some very simple processes to follow to protect yourself from such ham-fisted attempts. Make sure you scan your download before running any executable in the archive and be suspicious of self-archives.
I agree with you Leadcatcher, I've never had a 'dodgy' bit of software in over 10 years of downloading for MSTS, Railworks, Flight Simulator, etc. Sites like UKTrainsim remove anything that's reported as broken or defective.
Depends how you mean free, you can trawl the web for freebies, there are some though not much I'm personally interested in.
