I bought straight into 2016 a few months ago and have since bought keys for the 2013, 14 and 15 and each of them deposited/installed their content into the my 2016 version with no problem. They acted as DLC's and work fine
EDIT. In fact. Look at the DLC's on the store page and most of them were made for earlier versions.
Still figuring stuff out here LOL
If I am correct, would 'Railworks' add useable content to the latest Trainsim I own?
You can still buy Railworks Ultimate for $11, get a steam code and download file, but you only use the steam code to activate it, dont use the download file. 8 routes including the 3 fictional routes, Seebergbahn, Castle Rock and Hedborough North (original routes not the Steam Workshop ones) different route nums with different scenarios.
Still learning - much appreciated.

Most of the routes are called by there old names, but will install as there latest names and versions
Various Versions over the years-

Railworks Ultimate is probably RW with also the old IHH Challenger included, as there is no mention of the TestTrak in FSPilot site description.
It would add for example BNSF ES44AC & SD40-2. "Tornado edition" would additionally add A1 Tornado. I don't know what edition of TS2013 you have, but if you didn't have ECML or Cajon Pass with it, it would add them, too.
As said, if you check the C drive or wherever you installed TS, you will find the .exe is still called railworks.exe
You also will find the Utilities which is still used by freeware sites to install the routes/trains in convenient .rwp files.
If you want to make a backup of a route you created, you can use this Utilities.exe to create a .rwp file for backup and use it later if something happened.
TS2016 have a long history behind its back, all started from 2007-2008 Rail Simulator.
Rail Simulator was originally sold through EA (evil arts, lol), when former RailSimulator.com (DTG) buyed the rights to the game and thus futher developed it to RailWorks. I got the boxed version of RailWorks and got it through a discount by sending my valid Rail Simlulator code!
This steam account was first created when RailWorks came out, you can check my profile and see its almost over 6 years! If it wasn't for RailWorks, I wouldn't even know Steam existed!
As the years goes, RailWorks was upgraded plentiful times, RailWorks 2, RailWorks 3 (TS2012), TS2013, TSxx, and till this day. I even got Phorum Peninsula, created for RailWorks 2 and it still works this day, a little finiky, but still works!
So that download would add some routes and locos to Ts12. I can't quite figure what I would get, sorry?
This info is invaluable thanks again.
