Water trough
Does anyone know how to set-up the water trough from the 50's Riviera?

There is an explanation in the route manual, but basically, Ctrl-T lowers the scoop and raises it again. Incidentally I wrecked the scoop first time of trying, but you don't lose any points, though I'm sure you would have a lot of explaining in real life.

I love using my class 40's scoops on the rivvy 50, wonder what other diesels used them.

Guess that's through not raising in time? Gonna give it a go myself now . . .

Drove some of the route - not seen a water trough yet . . .

Hello Slugwash, the water troughs are located just South of Exminster Station, lower your scoop at the indicator post with an X displayed on the front of a lit lamp box at night, raise the scoop before over filling or next indicator X post. Don't soak the passengers in the first coach behind tender! The large water trough warning approach sign is the wavey WW black line on a white background a mile before the troughs start at the indicator posts.
Regards.

The water trough was only introduced into the game mechanic with the Riviera to Kingswear route. Only locos intruded with it or afterwards have a water scoop feature so don't try and do it with an A4, Flying Scotsman, etc. as it won't work. As has been said, its clearly explained in the Riviera line's manual.

If you want to try them in another setting, I built water troughs into my 'BRs ECML' route that you can find in the workshop, no other route on here as yet has them.

However, it occurs to me that the OP asked how to 'setup' the troughs, not just use them. In answer to that I can tell him that after building the physical water trough itself, it wont work until you place a water trough 'marker' at the start and end points of the trough itself. You should find this in the miscellaneous list (I think, I might be wrong). Best thing to do is open the Riviera route in the editor and go look at how it's setup there, then you'll get a better understanding for how it works.

Chicken Balti, was the optimum speed for picking up water between 50 and 60 mph? Slower and you didn't get a fill, much faster and you risked , at the least, drowning the front carriage.

Some loco tenders such as with the updated JT 5MT will also continue leaking water if you break the scoop.

"Additions -

Water scoop functionality, compatible with the water troughs on Dovetail Games’ Riviera in the Fifties route. Details for operating the water scoops are as follows: Press Ctrl + T to lower or raise the water scoop, or use the water scoop handle on the tender behind the driver’s seat by dragging it with the mouse – right to lower, left to raise. If the scoop is lowered over a trough, the tank will replenish until it reaches the max capacity of the tender. If the scoop is still down at the end of the trough then it will collide with the trough and cause a large splash from under the tender, and break. Lowering the scoop when no trough is present will also break it. If the scoop is broken, the tank has been damaged and will leak slowly until it is empty - in which case you will need to stop at a water tower and top up frequently."

Not sure if all locos with scoops have this implemented in TS if you break the scoop though.

DTG's didn't when I broke it, and no penalty points either.

Ah - right-o! I have just got to try that. Thanks all for the additional info. Good that this feature got added.

Well I seem to have achieved it without disaster, but nothing shows up in QD "Targets Complete", which I thought might happen.

Watched it from outside the train this time - can be seen to drop with spray evident, even in semi darkness.

Still would have been nice to have in "Quick Drive, Targets Complete" some notification of success, like for instance:
"Successfully deployed water scoop and replenished tender"
