I had consist editor crashes as well. There was an odd fix on the forums. Clear cache. Restart TS. Go to profile page and page though your locos and routes waiting for the portraits to load.
Then BEFORE trying to make a custom consist choose any preset consist and start a quick drive scenario. Once loaded quit the QD scenario, then try to make a custom consist. For me this allowed the indexing to continue - I think by creating a clean index to start from. The first index took a long time, but subsequently went quicker. After that, no crashes.
I had the same problem with a 3rd party loco and had to use the method described in this article:
Creating Consists via Blueprints for Quick Drive and AI by Matt Peddlesden
Article is located here: http://trainsimlive.blogspot.com/2015/04/creating-consists-via-blueprints-for.html
Should work for both official and 3rd party locos
Want to tell us how? just in case anyone searches
I just tried this myself in QD and had no problems.
Changed a DTG Class 20 to the Class 31 Large Logo and deleted all consists and added random cariages and saved OK - no crashes.
This may be pertinent (or not): My version is the 2016 version from the off with no updating from 2015.
Hoping it may help.
Edit: Settle to Carlisle route
The 3rd party loco that did not work in the QD menu when trying to change consists was the HRQ ES64U2 'Railion' Taurus
The method I cited above allowed me to create my own custom consists for that specific loco
And I would only recommend the method I cited above as an option of last resort
Odd but works all the time! Add patience to the recipe. It takes a lot of time loading the full blueprints. And use the horizontal scroll to help the images to load and display.
DO this every time you have a session of custom building. If you clean cache or shut down the game, I advise you to repeat the procedure.
I have consists with more than 100 vehicles.
It was Pavig who published this the first time I read it, a few months ago.
