Black Screen still happens!
Despite verifying the cache and checking files , this game still occasionally gives a black screen where you cant even ctrl alt delete to end the task from task manager, no key combination works, is there a FIX for this as its so annoying you have to reset the PC as you cant even get back to windows to close the program, so damn annoying,

Actually, black is the absence of color.

I too occasionally get this, ctrl-alt-del will bring up task manager, but that has crashed also. Only way out is to restart. Had it twice this morning while editing a quick drive consist.

It's a pain they should release a fix , ive read this has happened quite a lot , come on dovetail fix this issue as people pay a lot for your products!!

This happens to me as well on the odd occasion. With Windows 8.1 I've found it isn't necessary to reboot the computer but after Ctrl+Alt+Del choose Sign Out and then sign back in. It's still a nuisance though.

Hello itye1970, you seem to be 'assuming' everyone playing TS2016 has your problem, we don't.
What are your PC specs please? It is not possible to try and help you unless you provide your PC specs and more clear detail about your problem.

When exactly do you have a black screen?

I managed it two or three times (recently only) when I was alt-tabbing out very early during / before a loading screen (to adjust volume). "Alt-Tab, wait a few seconds, repeat" did solve it for me - had to press a few times, but nothing too bad. I tried it because the game is paused when you Alt-Tab out, and I suspected it just didn't wake up.

It is quite common issue so they should look into it , here are just a couple of threads with this issue and my specs below. Also if I validate my files and fix it then check them again a few days later one file fails to validate again especially after a new addon is installed!

Hello, there are many thousands of TS players all over the world who play TS without problems, it is not a quite common issue. No one has exactly the same PC configiration or specs, that is the real problem for any game issue. The original Black Screen problem after a TS update some time ago now, did appear to be a general issue affecting most players and it was addressed with a fix at the time.
If you add an addon, that will change the original game files you had, they will be changed and show as such when you validate your files. Don't validate your files just for the sake of it, only if the game is not working properly. Be aware though, you will have to install again any third party content you have added to the original game files.
Can you post your full PC specs using the 'Help' tab menu top right of this Steam page please?

I just started getting the identical issue yesterday after I try start a Quick Drive. The whole screen remains black and I cannot back out of it, no menus come up on ESC, and I cannot even get TS2017 then to quit from the Windows task bar. I have tried validating files and it did replace one, but the problem was still there. I then uninstalled TS2017 and even deleted the remaining local files, and re-installed it. Still the identical issue. Can't understand it as I was playing fine for three days. Problems only came in after I tried adding some add-ons from the Workshop and I created a free roam scenario. Those have all been deleted already with the re-install so can't still be the cause of it. Basically, I can't play the game at all now..... It's not a slow load as I've been staring for 10 minutes now at the black screen and it normally loaded in about 3 mins or so.

This is usually caused by an unsupported screen resdlution. This is not a game bug but an issue with your GPU resolution. You can go to the folder Railworks>Content and delete or rename the Players Profile.bin file and when TS is started it will rebuild and revert back to native resolution. This can be caused by incorrect manual adjustments,or driver updates to Windows or GPU.
