Xbox Controller - Editing the Action Menu
I've just started using a controller to drive the steam locomotives, and I have to say it's more solid than I thought it would be. I think I'm going to use it from now on as my default controls. Anyway, whenever I drive a steam locomotive, I always drive on the expert settings by pressing F5 twice first and leave it there for the rest of the scenario to see how well I do. However, in order to stoke the fire and use the water, I have to go back to the main HUD, then press up/down on the D-pad to stoke/water. I would like to fix this by editing the action menu by holding A then select two actions for both water valves and two to let water flow through. The same for opening the firebox and stoking. Is there a way to do this? Sorry if this went too long.

TL;DR: How can I add actions to the action menu on my controller (holding A)? Or how can I add the ability to water and stoke on a controller on the expert HUD without switching to the main HUD?

You could try RailWorks Joystick API - Its very easy to setup and enables you to use any controller/joystick etc for TS.

The version I downloaded doesn't have the option to change bindings for steam trains :(
I think you can remap the controller buttons in big picture mode..

Isn't that just for steam controllers though?

I struggled for a while with different options and then finally settled for the keyboard and controller combo. Regulator, throttle, brakes, camera, AWS reset - with the controller, everything else - with the keyboard.

It might not be the proper lean-back experience, but works quite well and definitely better then k/m or just the controller for me.

There is no way to customise the controller usage in TrainSim as far as I am aware.

Use left button on top up for water and down for coal

I don't have the game currently installed on this system so I can't check but there are many files that can be modded using RW Tools, especially when the controls are bin or xml format? Anyone ever checked that direction? I assume that API mentioned needs to alter some files as well so it should somehow be possible

The xbox controller setup is hard coded into TS. RWTools only hacks DLC files.

Any Logitech game pad can be modified in D mode to any key stroke that you want and a good alternative to the Xbox controller is the Logitech G13 game pad - infinitely variable keystroke mapping.
XPadder and Pinnacle Studios (+ free stuff on UKTS) are software apps that allow you to customise any gamepad/joystick, etc.

I wish RE XPadder. Unfortunately the hard coded TS Xbox mappings override and conflict with XPadder. I wish DT would just let us assign button commands like every other game written in the last two decades.
