I confirm the annoying bug with the coupling of the cars. I solved it with a repeating — pull forward, slow down, pull back. The contact speed at which it was possible to couple most often is 2-2.5 mph.
There is absolutely no need to keep order. All cars on my consist were shuffled.
It so happened that I assembled the whole 21-car consist on the 7th track, but not on the 8th. After that I moved it to the 8th. Then uncoupled all the cars from the locos. And after that the first task has been marked completed.
Leaving the cars, I went to the track 9 and attached the caboose. With the caboose, I drove back to track 8 and coupled the rest of the cars. Moved the entire consist to track 30. Then uncoupled all 22 cars, including the caboose. The end.
I'll run down towards the cars to be coupled at any old speed. At about 4 car lengths I need to be under 5 mph. And be at 2 by the time the stock bounces alive on its track. You will see it bounce every so little bit as it is awake for the coupling.
This does not always come out right in English, but its all tied up anyway.
adjusted
Front/RearPivotX to 8.3185
Front/RearCouplingPivotX to 7.5684
so that the collision box edge is +- 0.375 away from Pivot / CouplingPivot

Its ok.
Most games the Devs fix stuff. Keep the gamers happy. Paying customers that is.
This is one of the very few games that appears to have issues going back a decade in some cases unfixed. Its almost the Devs cannot give two ♥♥♥♥♥.
Fine whatever. I quit worrying about that years ago.
