I think from 2013 version onward it's the same game, they just release a 2kXX named version that comes with different routes is all. You can buy say, TS 2022 and then buy TS 2016 and nothing will change, just you'll have new routes that came with the 2016 version. If you want 2012 and older then that will be more difficult as it's not compatible with the modern 2013-2022 version of the game. You'll probably have to find a DVD/CD copy of the game for the oldest versions unless you can find a downloadable version at one of the online game stores.

The last big changes were introduced with TS2014, the weather system was completely reworked that's why some old routes have sky issues. And the UI was overhauled. Apart from that it is the same game, just more options added.

Every DVD version you'll get will have you log on to Steam before installing and instantly download the newest version of TS.

So apart from sky issues in a few vintage routes, it is fully backwards compatible.

I hate how you can't see the images, unless you log in with an account. Which I am very lazy to make one.

Use gg.deals and type in 'Train Simulator' then go into packs where it shows TS22,21,20,19,18 etc. It shows legit sites that offer the keys.
Edit:
1) Yes but I think it's US only as GameStop is US company.
2) Yes, even if you purchase 'Railworks' version, it still upgrades to current year and adds all core updates.

I got into the sim during the Humble Bundle sale for the 2020 version, lol, since then I bought, if memory is correct, 2015, 2016, 2017. 2019 and 2021 versions to add more routes. I'd buy from online stores in UK, Sweden, wherever I can find them, lol. Just make sure it's not regionally restricted and says it activates in your country. I'm in USA and never had any issues except for the one that included the UP turbine loco and SD60M, Sherman Hill, but DTG fixed that issue of the locos not being included after I sent in a support ticket.

I use search engines like the Razer game search and also the IsThereAnyDeal because I'm a retiree and on a fixed income, so I have to rely on sales a lot.

TSxx packs are great way to get stuff for cheaper price.

Indeed, it was great to get TS2022 on the recent Steam sale and get Birmingham Cross and other new routes for £16.

Old versions can be handy to get discontinued routes like North Wales Coastal, which is also a fairly regular requirement for third party DLC too.

We had a train sim years ago from a third party, that one involved a all out top end race between a Dryfuess Hudson on the NYC Limited and 14 some cars with the F7 set of four with their version of it

The goal was to be first into the destination. Both of you owned the railroad on the dual mains for the duration. It does take a few minutes to get up into the 100's Which showed me how good the Hudson class engine must have been in her day.

What train sim was that?

on this topic - i just actually got a legit sealed copy of Railworks 1 from Ebay, there are few copies there that are sealed now, - although i have Train Simulator on steam, i also would like to actually just play the original Railworks, i like its UI and feel more as odd as that might sound

surely surely there is a way to do this? having the key for Railworks and the Discs - to make it just install the game only from the discs and not download anything and i know that all the newer routes would be incompatible, that is fine, i can reinstall that later if i want to play those.

anyone have any ideas?
