As an instructor on real world steam locomotives, closing the regulator (especially from second valve settings) before adjusting the reverser, is one important part of training new drivers for their own safety. Broken bones and injured hands, as reversers fly about, is one thing to avoid.
The HUD F4 settings on Pro engines, do not always replicate 'actual' engine control settings, as manuals explain. You will need to use the F5 display and cab gauges, reverser visual indicators to drive.
