Is this old Microsoft Train Sim reworked?
Is this the Microsoft Train Sim, in a new package?

Basically, yes. It's been through various producers and developers over the years - but the name KuJu is still visible in the file directories.

Ok, I thought it looked like it was. I'm guessing some old bankruptcy and/or buyout must have occurred along the way, for Microsoft's name to no longer be associated with it, although the MS Flight Sim did still retain their corporate logo.
As for this Train Sim, is this core game the equivalent of the complete MS Train Sim, or did they chop up the sim into what are now lots of DLC? Or - the DLC are just newer add-ons from the old MS sim?

If you want something more modern try the one listed below. It is made by the same company that made TS2017. Released a few months ago and is 64 bit and DX11. It's still in it's infancy at the moment with more routes and content to come.

I have played both MS and TS2017 and there is no comparison between the two other than they both use trains and track. Assets are completely new with most emphasis on European train systems.

There are a few construction methods that MS used that I wish were in Train Sim but that is about it. More US buildings etc would also be nice.

TS is a game inspired upon MSTS, but it is a completely independent development. Inded, it has track and the idea is that you are are a train driver and you may recognize some key bindings. That's all. Same thing for TSW which is a completely new game, new technology but potentially a richer game play.

If you payed TSW for a while, TS looks outdated, if you plat TS, MSTS looks outdated witha poor graphics quality. The price you pay is a more and more expensive computer...

There is no backwards link to MSTS on a technical level, although the original developer (Kuju) is the same.

TS started out as Rail Simulator, which became Railworks, which became Train Simulator.

I am interested in this post because I still have my MSTS discs but coud never get it to work with Windows 10, people at Train Sim.com say it will but not for me.
Is there some thing on Kuju that night help me.

You most likely will need to run it in compatability mode.

TS20xx aka railworks is not a revamped Microsoft Train Simulator. They are totally different platforms. Microsoft shut down their game studios years ago, and kuju kept on going with what you see here. KUJU never colaberated with Microsoft in regards to this sim. Kuju is, and always has been it's own separate entity.

There is a tutorial at the steam4me website that details step by step, how to get MSTS working on windows 7. You MUST follow that tutorial down to the letter and not skip any step nor take any shortcuts. But what I recommend you do, is to download and install Open Rails, if you wish to use MSTS content. Open Rails is backwards compatible with MSTS content and the only things you need from MSTS, are 4 folders. The GLOBAL folder, Routes folder, Sound folder, and the trains folder which includes the consists and trainset folder.

You honestly do not need to have a fully working install of MSTS any longer. Open Rails has a route editor, and 2 different modes of creating your own scenarios.

Open Rails does not require a full MSTS install to use MSTS content.

Not completely true

MSTS was made by Kuju but published by Microsoft
Rail Simulator was made by Kuju but published by EA (but different game engine completely - microsoft owned the original i believe).

Railworks was released by RSDL (includes members of the original kuju team, who bought the software), RSDL became RSC who then became Dovetail Games (who have all been basically the same company - so no actual change of hands between these :) )
