But do watch Matt P's tutorial video on free-roams, it really will help you a lot. As will developing your skills using the game's World Editor/Scenario Editor.
And no-one is becoming annoyed at you. Only a little frustrated that you won't believe any of us that what you want to do, can be done in the game. And we're desperately trying to give you pointers, but you'll have to do a bit of study/homework based on the above info to learn how to do it. Anway we'll leave it there, let you have a go. And finger's crossed, you'll manage to achieve what you wish in the game. Good luck with it. All the best.
I would like to add some comments on the subject of switching trains as I believe this is important to get the most from Free Roam:-
*When you approach another train while on the move you get a message in a box in the top right hand corner of the screen that allows you to switch but that disappears after about a minute.
* You can then switch to any other train you can see by clicking on it. However this often does not work but by pressing "8" on the keys you can then usually switch.
* Usefully you can switch to other trains further away by using the free camera but this only allows you to move a limited distance, my guess is about one mile. I raised this with DTG some time ago as to why there is a limit on the free camera movement and they said that it was to prevent players form getting lost. I do not accept this explanation because you can at any time move back to your existing train by using the Hud or the relevant keys.
* I have tried switching trains by using the Scenario Editor as has already been suggested, but I found that in doing this you lost all the previous movements you had made in the Free Roam, which is not what I wanted. The Free Roam Scenario is then reset to the original point where you set it up.
* I have said before on here that the best way to switch would be to click on a train on the 2D map, You could then very quickly switch to any train anywhere on the Free Roam Scenario. Unfortunately this does not work.
1. Press Esc and in the 5. Line press World Edition.
2. Press 9 for the map. In the map find the position you want to fly to. Put the pointer on that pos. Press CTRL + mouse click. Now you desired position should be in the center of the map.
3. On the top in the middle of the screen you have a fly out - this with the compass. In this fly out - right to the longitude - you have a small triangle. Press this and you will see your position will change.
4. Now we are finish. Leave the map and push the arrow down in right lower corner.
5. VUPTI dot com you are now in you new position and can continue you free roam scenario from there.
Railman_Tourist - you've got to clone the route and make it a freeroam senario on the senario page....if you don't know how to do this I can give it to you step by step?
No response from Dovetail....I shall give them a reminder.
I was wondering if you ever found any working solution to your freeroam issue above?
I have been a longtime player/fan of TS since the early days of RailWorks.
But I also find this problem very very annoying, I mean it is called "FreeRoam" right !?
The problem is (like you said) the player engine becomes "tethered" to the free camera (8 key), which prevents any far away camera movement, without having to use the Editor (totally dumb).
The free camera should NOT be "tethered" to anything in FreeRoam. Period.
The only (partial) workaround I have found is to use the "JumpTo" command in a LUA script, which will at least show you any certain route location without having to use the Editor.
Only problem is Iam not sure if you can click on a different engine to drive it.. ???
Maybe you can experiment with this... let me know if this helps.
Some people need to read your first post again.
As you rightly say. You cannot change trains, that are out of camera sight of each other, whilst in a scenario and continue in that same scenario and that includes using the editor. It will simply save and restart the scenario from the beginning.
I would love to be proved wrong.
..
Dash - I have a work around for smaller lines where I hide small engines at 2 mile intervals and jump loco to loco - this shows it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVlE5coNkvs&t=38s
It takes a bit of setting up but works quite satisfactorily and indeed some workshop lines Temsby Port, Yatemouth, Crabenmore, Hedborough North, seem so well suited for this, though it would be a massive undertaking for a larger line and I think you'd hit the memory limitations anyway. You put it so much more succinctly than I did with your 'The free camera should NOT be "tethered" to anything in FreeRoam.Period.'
That sums it up and whilst I know nothing about it, surely someone had to do a bit of extra coding to tether the free camera. Why they'd do this I cannot on earth imagine - design a railway simulator that you can do pretty much anything with - build your own line, run it in any way, with any stock you choose, day, night, any weather, even have AI trains running and then hamstrung it in this way.
I'm not really up on scripts - do you put this command in on the properties field on TS before launch or is there another way?
