A LNER G5 released
I see Caledonia Works (via Digital Traction) have released a G5.........just the thing for Weardale Teesdale.

DT/CR are churning out some nice locos lately, plenty of liveries AND in weathered too. Their E4 is on my wishlist.

The Victorian Lad is a loco creating machine, I've never seen so many produced so quickly. It's nice to have a good selection of smaller engines for steam era routes.

Just the thing for the Weardale and Teesdale and I make no apology for liking modern traction. I wonder if the G5 Locomotive Company knows about it.

I'm very sorry that all the old fuddy-duddies like you are stuck in the steam age- I like modern traction :-)

...'cept I don't really. Whenever I read about the Class 43 here I have to remind myself that people aren't talking about a Warship but an HST power car. The HSTs were, indeed still are, magnificent but I'll take a Deltic any day. As for all these multiple units- I can't tell one from another.

Me too.....well the modern ones anyway, I can recognise the 101s, 105s etc, heck I spent enough time on them as a kid - getting in the seat behind the driver if I could.

And as for HSTs, I never could forgive them for doing away with the deltics......

Oh I miss that. I rode a Bubblecar (Class 122) on the Weardale Railway (Stanhope to Bishop Auckland and return) just before it closed for Winter and made a bee-lline for the seat behind the driver- took me right back. Not least because the very same unit used to run the "Dodger" service between the junction and town stations in my home town of Stourbridge 40-odd years ago. Almost makes me wish I was one of those people who takes numbers so I'd know if I'd ridden it back then.

I moved to Durham in time to see the last six months of Deltics in service. They made an instant and indelible impression- I know people talk about steam loco's having more personality and I can sort of see it but to my mind Deltics like to show off the same way. This video from about 17:30 shows what I mean (turn the speakers up):

I was in two minds about getting up early to film that but I'm glad I did.

But where were we...? Oh yes- G5- good oh. I wonder where they got the sounds from. And all variations seem to have the extended coal bunker which was a later addition.

I also wonder what route the scenarios it includes use. The W&T seems the obvious choice but all the footage I can find of it in YouTube (not much of course) show it running on a Welsh route!

Hello,
I got the sounds from various preserved NER locomotives such as the Q6 and J27. The extended coal bunker cage was first fitted in NER days and later extended later in LNER.

Thanks Kris. I was aware that contemporary loco's shared similar if not identical plumbing so it should sound pretty authentic. As you may have gathered I'm not particularly a steam buff and would be unlikely to have noticed the extended coal bunker if someone wasn't building a G5 ten minutes away. They certainly did run without the extension though with round windows at the rear of the cab (it was the windows I noticed).

What can you tell us about scenarios?

Were you in contact with the G5 Locomotive Co.?

Great work Kris - next a LNER J24 and then a V3, thanks ;)

+1 on the accolades to Kris/VL/CR, just bought your E4 in the DT sale. Superb!

For anyone who's interested and in the Shildon area the G5 Locomotive Company is starting their open days again. 10-1 first Saturday of the month so the first is tomorrow. Usual disclaimer.

A bit of necromancy here but it seems more appropriate than starting a new thread...

Is there any issue with the availability of this loco'? CW's Facebook is still up with links to Digital Traction but those links only return a 404 error and there's no sign of the G5 on the site if you dig around.

He puts out a prodigious amount of work. I don't know what the quality is like as I don't have any of his stuff yet (he's done nothing yet that fits in with my wanting only things which would have actually been there in my freeroams), but he deserves our support. I intend to put right that I haven't bought any of his products soon.
