Previous version DLC
I’m interested in joining the train sim community. However, I’d like to get as much content as possible for cheap. I’ve read that if you buy keys for previous versions of train simulator, you can get the DLC for those versions. I’ve seen some people that even suggest buying older versions and just let it auto update to 2018 (but then you won’t get 2018 content). Also, there seems to be a compatibility issue with 2017 where if you try to add it to a steam profile that already has TS, you won’t get the dlc. I guess the question is: is there a specific order that you should add keys so you get the DLC of previous versions? And if I buy the bundle for 2018, does that disqualify me from the 2017 content?

yes i saw a store warning about 2017, but it didnt have that warning on 2016

i would buy one of those old version keys or retail boxes, add to steam, then during a steam sale you can get the 2018 content for $10 to $20 (when buying, it will say you wont get a second copy of the base game, but you will get the new dlcs added to your collection)

this way it would be as if you bought the way long time owners did, as i wouldnt want to risk going backwards in years

dont forget, there are also free mods

Last time I did it (a year ago or something) it still worked. It gives an error you already own Train Simulator and won't receive an extra copy, but that refers to the core game (the menu). You should still get the DLC.

At least, that's how it worked a year ago. I've seen a TS2016 key for $1 on the internet, so that might be worth a gamble.

You can add content from older versions of TS anytime you wish, the order (backwards/forwards) doesn't matter.

If you happen to have TS2018 already, & add a Steam code (of TS2012 through to TS2017) to your Steam account - then it will simply install the DLC from these previous versions to your game ignoring the rest. It won't touch your core game, as you already running the latest version.

If you instead start with installing any of the older editions of the game (going right back to TS2012), then the core game will automatically immediately update through Steam to the latest version i.e. TS2018.

Any unwanted warning messages you get, can be safely ignored. So long as you've purchased genuine Steam game codes, & install to the same Steam user account - then all the content from these respective game editions will be added to your game with problem.

It's definitely a very easy way for new players to gain access to plenty of DLC content for very little investment. You can ideed get TS2016 for a $1, and most of the other packs are easily obtainable for approx $5. [TS2013 is the only exception, there's a real shortage on that one, so very expensive]. All the best.

I've found a TS 2013 for £3.92 but is says this underneath:

"Note: This game can't be activated if you already have any other Train Simulator version activated on your Steam account. The core engine of Train Simulator 2013 gets automatically updated to the 2016 version. The content (routes, locomotives etc.) will be the same as in the 2013 version!"

Not sure I even understand that last sentence (?)

It certainly makes it needlessly very confusing for folk! lol

If someone has no idea what they're talking about, they're better off keeping quiet. Looks like he put up that listing in 2016 & hasn't updated it since. And they were very confused even back then!

Thank you all for your reply! I went ahead and purchased the 2018 version, so I will go through in the coming weeks and try to get copies of older versions for cheap. So far, 2017 was the only one I saw consistent warnings for.

Actually Al that was a comment on the site page from the company, not the seller I'm afraid :-/

Remove the Dollar $ signs in a text editor and paste that into browser.

That's a clever way of yours to get around the problem with external links! :steamhappy:

I'm a bit baffled there, it still looks like a message that has been put up by the seller on the G$2$a site, rather than an official one from our favourite software publisher?

I was thinking it was 'site' message but if it was the seller then, well, I'm wrong :-)

I certainly don't think it's a DTG one.
