You may also want to take a look at Trainz and Run8. From what I've been told they're both very good games (though I personally haven't played them).
The best thing you can do I would suggest is read a little bit more of the forums and the driving of but don't miss the endless complaints that come with this game I can't help here but I'm sure there would be something way more suitable for a child of that age in the market.
This for may of us is a pain in the backside some of the time and and I wouldn't wish that on anyone especially when I think you can do better.
Dear OP. The above is a great idea from Furley. These seasonal festive quirky add-ons were simply great fun for ages - a really nice intro to the sim in as easy as possible fashion for younger players.
Adding to that, my suggestion would be simply buy a key (via general online games store - non Steam) for one of the older versions of TS i.e. TS2016 or TS2017. You can buy one of these for approximately £1.50 (yes really that cheap).
When you activate the older version of TS on Steam, it will automatically update the core game (i.e. game engine, interface etc...) to the lastest TS2018. You won't get the content (routes & locos) for the new version of the game, but you will have all the routes/locos DLC that came with the older version you purchased.
So an extremely cheap way of just trying the game to see if it's suitable for your son. I happen to think, if the game is setup correctly, and it's used with appropriate right routes/locos (used in simple mode) - it could be suitable for your lad [even if diffiuclties playing alone, it would be a really nice thing play together]. All the best.
Our opinions do not change the quality of TS but if you listen to what we say you may be more informed. Many here have years of experience of TS, DTG and the pros/cons of each. If you wish to ignore this then it's your loss.
And to the OP, it's not a game as such or an arcade programme if that's what you're after. For a more relaxed feel with less realism and more breathing room take heed to what others have reccomended.
It is up to the developers to improve the game and its mechanics. And years of experience may mean that you are used to the surroundings and ins and outs of the game, but the optimistic newbiehere and there may have a point.
