I have the above add on which is fine except for one problem. There are no tracks, but the trains do follow the route. has anyone any ideas where the problem lies or have I downloaded a faulty file.

Do you have all of the DLC that this third-party route depends upon for assets?

Yes. I wondered if one of those could be at fault but I don't know which file would contain the tracks. It's a bit strange as the route is there just no tracks on top.

Looking it up it needs the European and UK Loco & Asset Pack, US Community Asset Pack, Woodhead Route and BR Class 101 DMU. Have a look at your DLC list in Steam's Library tab and see if any of those is missing. If all are present a file verify may fix things.
