Where to edit Level of Detail (LOD)?
Not sure if this belongs in content creation or here as im just editing some errors in DLC not making my own

Ive started poking around in data files.. Removing drivers etc

Next on the list is reworking the lovely yet error filled class 07 shunter

The main visible flaw is its cab windows are set far too low in level of detail range and disapear from the model in full view of the camera.. It looks awful

Im hoping to find the numbers to increase the LOD numbers so the windows dont disapear so soon

Ive found a way to edit speed.. Im fixing the horn bringing it inline with her 03 sisters and switching the engine sounds away from the terrible class 08 default

This most important change though escapes me. Can anyone assist?

Thanks

Also can you alias sound files? i notice the class 101 minus transmission whine sounds more like the class07 high rpm engine than the included 08s

LOD is determined at the model creation stage. DTG use 3DsMax from Autodesk. The LOD is a part of the naming convention for each separate part of the model. i.e. 1_0750_wheel where 1 is the level of the detail, 0750 is the distance from which it can be seen (750 metres). Level 2 might be named 2_1500_wheel. The problem is that each 'model' is completely separate from each other. So level 1 might have the wheel model being highly detailed with all the rim, spokes, tyres and high detail textures applied, while the level 2 model might simply be a low detail disc, maybe with just 8 sides (octagonal rather than nicely rounded with 32 or 64 sides) etc. Bear in mind that, according to the model, there could be as many as 5 or so separate levels of detail, so 5 separate models would need to be constructed.

This all makes it completely impossible for you to make any changes to your class 07. Unless, that is, you create your own class 07 completely from scratch.

Sorry to disappoint.

Ahh, shame. I had hoped LOD distances would be stored in say a bin file.. The models good otherwise.. Not sure what skyhook were thinking.. Reading what you posted seems maybe a number was left out.. Windows dispear at around 5 carriage lengths

Thanks anyway. Its a big help

Skyhook did reply in the past..gives me a bit of hope

Here is something that you can try if you wish - it MIGHT help (but probably won't). Best to do this with RW_Tools if you have it.

Locate the GeoPcDx file for the loco and make a back-up copy.
Open it (in RW_Tools?). Search for the word radius. You should find a line that looks like this>

<Radius d:type="sFloat32" d:alt_encoding="000000E098A40B40" d:precision="string">3.45537</Radius>

Look at that number 3.45537. This is a number that affects a thing called the 'Bounding Sphere' which CAN affect the way things appear when viewed from certain angles and distances. I have found that if that number is a little on the small side, then increasing it very often (not always) improves things, although this is mostly with objects that seemingly disappear completely when viewed from tight angles. In the case above, I would be inclined to change the 3 to a 30 (and delete everything after the decimal point), then save and see what happens.

Unfortunately there appears to be no way of knowing just which part of the model this number applies to, and depending on the complexity of the model and the way it was constructed, there could be dozens (even hundreds!) of lines like that above, not all with the same numbers. So it becomes a bit tedious changing all the numbers.

Just a thought, something to try on a wet boring day!
