Importing Content From Previous Versions
The DLC page for the Cajon Pass route says that if you own Railworks you already have this route. This seems to imply that the content can be imported into TS2017 and used. Or are they merely saying to run the older program to use this route?

From a user's standpoint being able to import the content from Railworks and the original MSTS would be an enormous boon in not having to have all older versions installed to enjoy the various content we own. However, I can understand that improved modeling technology might make those older model files incompatible with the current version.

MSTS has noting to do with Trainsimulator. Cajon pass is one of the oldest routes, when TS was still called Kuju Railsimulator. I think you still can buy it. It's a nice route anyway.

Still no useful answer so let's try it again.

On the DLC page for the Cajon Pass route it says that if you own Railworks you already have this route. Are the devs saying that routes from Railworks can be imported and used in Train Simulator 2017, or are the devs saying to run Railworks in order to enjoy this route? Some clarification would be appreciated. Being able import data from earlier versions would certainly be a huge advantage.

Yes, you can buy previous versions (Railworks, TS 2012+)* and activate them on Steam. Yes, the content included in those versions will be added to your TS 2017 install.

*One doesn't need to buy a copy of Railworks and TS 2012. TS 2012 comes with the same content that Railworks does.

OK, but I have the Railworks CD/DVD. If I reinstall it from that will TS2017 find the content?

If you install from the DVD, the first time you run it will update the basic game to TS2017 (whether you want to or not) but all the original DVD content will still be there, including the original routes. That's how I got to where I am; I have some really old stuff.

If you still have the DVD package, does it have an activation key printed either on the manual or the DVD case..? If so, then you should be able to activate the content through the Steam client - 'Games > Activate a product on Steam'.

I'll have to find the Railworks package. I know it's buried here in the clutter somewhere. Had a motherboard failure a couple of months ago and had to essentially rebuild the system almost from scratch since the old CPU and memory wouldn't work with current motherboard designs. All the games that were installed from CDs and DVDs have not been reinstalled yet.

I could be wrong here but, I think that when you put the DVD in and try and load TS off it all it well do is verify that you own TS via your Steam account and proceed to download it off steam with the DLC that you already own.

Well, it turns out that what I have here is Rail Simulator, the predecessor to Railworks, published by EA. Some research indicates that the program engine was upgraded when Railworks was released, so the routes in this package probably can't be used in TS2017. Drat!

Guess I'll just have to install this, and the several Trainz packages I have, and the original MSTS separately, assuming they'll still work under Win10. Plus a couple of versions of Railroad Tycoon, Rails Across America and Sid Meier's Railroads!
