T.S.2016 U.P. 8,500 h.p. Gas Turbine
I cannot get this locomotive moving. I push the start button, the light lights up and it says "initialising start up" and i am waiting a long time for the amps to rev up, but i see nor hear any activity. After waitng at least 5 minutes, i give up. Do i need to wait longer or is it another glitch ?

Maybe you had a mis-start (there's a 1% chance of it happening). Did you notice flames coming out of the exhaust?

By the way, the RPMs in the manual are wrong. They're for the earlier GTEL that had a smaller diameter turbine that ran at higher rpm. Instead of running at a constant 6,900rpm, it should say that it runs at 4,860rpm. The switchover from diesel fuel to the modified no. 6 heavy black fuel oil occurs at 3,800rpm (not 5,000rpm).

I'm also having a problem with it. When I create a long heavy freight train with it, I start, and then release the brakes. Once I do, the train jerks forward and derails. What's the problem? Because this primarily occurs on the Turbine.

How do you handle the throttle when starting off? Remember that with a long train, it takes a long time for the brakes to release all the way to the last car at the rear of the train. You have to start off gently after waiting long enough for the brakes to come off. A way to cheat and see if all of the brakes have released is to look at the F5 HUD. In the advanced brakes for Sherman Hill, the "brake cylinder pressure" in the F5 HUD is actually an average of the pressures in all the brake cylinders of all the cars. When it reaches 0psi, it means the brake release has reached the last car.

Which cars are you putting into the consist? Perhaps one or more of the cars you're using is poorly set up and has strange physics. That does seem to happen when mixing cars that don't have their couplings properly configured (I believe that's one of the causes of "flying trains" in TS).

I have this issue as well.

Which one? The start-up not happening or the lurching forward?

Something else I remember is that the physics in TS start to go wonky if the trains are very, very long (like 100+ cars). That's why the consists for the GTEL are the length that they are.

Also, when pulling away, after releasing the train brakes, watch the Notching Guide gauge and don't let the needle go into the red - that means avoid notching up too quickly.

I've just tried out a few minutes of one of the career scenarios with 53 cars behind the GTEL and it worked fine. You do have to remember to wait for the rpm to reach 4,860 before taking the throttle out of Idle.

it just says "initializing start up". i see and hear no amps being reved up. i just sit there for a long time. everything remains quiet and there is no activity showing. the throttle makes the sound as if its clicking up or down, but the lever does not move.

Are you using simple or expert controls mode?

Another thing is that you must have the A unit first (the one with the cab, obviously), with the B unit (containing the turbine) behind it and then the tender (carrying the fuel for the turbine).

simple controls

Ah, that explains it. The GTEL has some very advanced scripting to simulate the turbine and consequently it isn't compatible with simple controls.

i have not heard it referred to as GTEL before. do you know what the words are, that are represented by the letters are ? i will try expert controls next time i try and start it. that is the best suggestion i have read. thank you. i will let you (people) know if it worked or not asap.

GTEL means Gas Turbine Electric Locomotive. The turbine does the same job as the diesel generator in a diesel locomotive - it generates the electricity that goes to the traction motors.

thank you. when i switched to expert controls, it worked.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad that's solved :)

How does one go about getting the turbine?
