Texturing for RW in 3ds Max 2016
I decided to begin my experience with shape creation by making a simple rock, to which, I wish to apply a texture. I have selected RW Material from the list in the mapping browser and have applied the texdiff shader and the texture image to the RW Material that you see in the photo. Yet, for some unknown reason, I cannot apply the texture to the object. It just comes out grey. Although I am quite new to this, I believe I have followed all the instructions in the Developer Documents to create a scenery object in 3ds Max.

The following is a link to a screenshot of the 3ds Max User Interface that I have reached so far. Please have a look and see what I am missing here. I ought to be able to click the button to assign the selected material to the object, refresh it in the viewport, and see a textured rock. Yet the rock still shows up grey. Where might I have gone wrong?

Any guidance from one with experience in 3ds Max would be most appreciated. Thank you.

For a begginer, I would advise you to select 'Compact Material Editor' from the Modes tab (top left of the materials panel). But on either editor (Slate of Compact), you need to make sure that you select the 'Show Shaded Material In Viewport' icon (little square with black / white chequer pattern - about halfway along the line of icons along the top there). There will be no need to refresh the viewport - it should change immediately.

Her's a little video I made for youtube some time ago which might help you> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUeDE33N0Z8&t=46s

@RoadMaster. Not heard from you in a couple of days. Would be nice to know how you are getting on so far!

Your tutorial was excellent, Glenn. Thank you. I have subscribed to your youtube channel in case you produce any more of them.

With your guidance,I have successfully created a rock and it works like a charm in the route that I'm building. Now, on to more complicated stuff like multiple textures on one object. Needless to say, I am still baffled about that process at this time. I obtained some royalty-free shapes that I would like to re-texture and there is where I am having some difficulty in converting them to Railworks. I can export the IGS file just fine because there is no non-RW material in the shape. Yet, when I go to convert it after creating a blueprint, it causes "Convert to Geo" to crash. Obviously, I am doing something wrong.

All that being said, and although I am frustrated with the learning curve of shape creation, I am bound and determined to create a DLC route that will turn heads. It is coming out beautifully so far.

Thank-you once again for your help. Please PM me at RWA if you would be interested in a collaborative effort in creating (or re-mapping) some shapes I have chosen for the route. I could use all the help I can get. :steamsad:

Regards,
Grant

OK, going to expose my ignorance here - RWA? (Or maybe I am just getting old and forgetful!). I am rather busy at the moment trying to create my own route (RL in the 70s), but at least I don't have a day job to worry about, so if it's nothing too complicated (still consider myself a beginner) I will be happy to have a go & see what I can do.

Sorry Glenn. My fault in presuming that you would know that RWA is the RailWorks America website at www.railworksamerica dot com. I'm delighted that you would like to have a go with a scenery item or two in your spare time. I can send you a link from my OneDrive. But, not here. I don't want just anybody downloading this stuff. If possible, please send me a PM at RWA. My handle is RoadMaster259.

Road Master, I started with a simple box model. The model appears on the Blueprint Editor 2 preview screen. But why is it not showing up in the in-game editor? I would be very happy if you help.

I'm guessing that you pressed F8 to see it in the blueprint editor preview? Did you then press F7 if you were happy with the way it looked in the preview? You must press F7 to export it out to Train Simulator.
