"DISK WRITE ERROR"
So, I love trains, they are my passion. But I have gotten the "disk write error" when starting the steam app, I've uninstalled train simulator, and reinstalled, but It won't load completely, it says: Downloading. But it only goes to 91% and I really want to play Train Simulator, I've tried almost everything, but I'm soon losing hope, so can someone please help me? I would be so happy :)

It sounds like your HDD is at fault - either too full or damaged. First check how much spare room you have on it. If that is OK, then you may need to run something like CHDSK to check and repair damagaed sectors. For more information about CHDSK just type it into Google

I've tried both now, and my drive says that I have no errors in my steam games. I've tried everything. And nothing seems to work, and I'm still getting the disk error message. :(

Have you run chkdsk on this drive? At a command prompt in windows (Google if unsure) run chkdsk /f - you will get a message saying this will occur on next reboot. Be aware it can take several hours and do not do anything whilst its running, Read this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9709-FKCB-4230
How full is this drive? That is how much Free Space

I did the chkdsk check, and It worked! My train simulator is working again :D Thank you glennives60 and Phase3 SO MUCH for helping me <3<3 xoxo :D I never thought of doing the chkdsk check, but it worked, I even tried to uninstall the game and reinstall, but that didn't work, If Train Simulator crashes again, I will come back here to fix it again :) much love! Bye ;)

Take this as a warning; back up regularly and consider replacing your drive soon so you can transfer everything across to the new one before the old one fails.

Good advice given here. The error you've had (even if temporarily fixed) is a warning your hard drive isn't at all 'happy', and might possibly fail all together in the near future. In your situation, I personally would do as Furley has suggested with a fresh backup of all my key content. But also carry out a clean-up (remove clutter; unwanted progammes, temp files etc...) of my drive as best as I can. And then immediately create a full clone of the drive, saving the clone file on an external drive.. That way if your drive fails you've got a safe backup of your Windows Operating System (plus all programmes as currently is). Meaning you can avoid the pain of having to re-authorise your Windows O/S with Microsoft, if you were instead to do a full clean intall of Windows on a new drive. Plus also avoid the reinstallation of your other software programmes. Anyway, very much hoping your hard drive behaves itself for the time being. All the best.

Might be a good opportunity to convert to SSD !!

That's what I did when my hard drive started to error, well an SSD and a second larger hard drive as I couldn't afford a big enough SSD! Managed to clone the old one to avoid having to reinstall. The old drive failed completely (I left it as a 3rd drive) in less than a week after the transfer.

I just had this problem while installing TS2020. Repeatedly it would randomly give this error during the download. I ran a CHKDSK on the drive and all reported ok. I tried to download again and again after a few seconds, it failed the same. I disabled AVG and voila, it's now perfectly fine! I suspect AVG didn't like one or more of the files and was attempting to quarantine them, upsetting Steam.

I just had reason to un-install & re-install TS. While downloading, I had the 'Downloads' steam panel open. Every now and then I got the Disk Write error and downloading would pause. On the right on the panel, near the top, I noticed it kept saying 'Update Required' and clicking on the little arrow got things going again. Towards the end of the download, this happened numerous times, every few seconds in fact. But it eventually all downloaded successfully. This was very strange and unusual behaviour, as I have re-installed TS a number of times over the years and this is the first time this kind of thing has ever happened (to me).

For the record, I have a custom built PC, now 6 months old. It has an M.2 NVME 512GB drive with over 300GB empty space (plus an old fashioned 1TB mechanical HDD for back-ups!) and 32GB RAM. I have run a couple of disk checks and all report 'No Errors'.

I've had the same issue with Avast. Disabled it for an hour just to see if it got past a 'sticking point' and it's now downloaded fine! THANK YOU!!!

For anyone experiencing this issue and the above doesn't solve your issue. I've just encountered this. I went into Steam logs and it showed the FGW.bak (YMMV) folder as the issue, I removed the .bak, ran the update again and it completed successfully. Hope it helps someone.
