It depends on you, if mouse/keyboard is easier than a controller or not.
In game you can also use the 'F4' HUD, it should be the easiest way, you only need your mouse
Mentioning the keyboard does raise one point. Some DLC has functions that are specifically controlled by the numeric keypad keys so does your laptop have a full-size keyboard? It's not the end of the world if not- firstly I believe this is limited to a few of the more advanced locomotives which you may not have anyway. If you do you may consider it worth getting a full size USB keyboard for a few quid. Even a cheap one will probably be better than your laptop's keyboard so, if you do much typing on it, one could be a good investment anyway. When I used a laptop for everything I had keyboard, printer and an external drive connected with a USB hub so when I did take it somewhere there was only the hub and power to unplug. (Yes my printer was connected by a cable- this was the Dark Ages.)
