Am I doing something wrong? (Mechanic confusion)

So I've got the broomerang dash
The instructions say to toss the broom then hit x again
However, on most edges, I need to jump before I hit x
but only SOME.
Most times if I hit X, the broom zips back to me and I do not move. So I've gotten into the habit of jumping straight up after I throw but sometimes that means i'm not fast enough. And sometimes jumping cancels the forward movement towards the broom.
It's making the timing with some moving platforms feel impossible.

EDIT jumping then pressing X twice seems to work for those instances, is that as intended?

If I'm doing something incorrect, please someone lemme know, thank you.

There have been a few puzzles that because of slightly different surfaces it's made them harder.
Ex. shooting the ball in multiple directions, I missed over and over because I could not just step forward and stand on the spawn spot (which I'm guessing is intentional) it can just feel frustrating.

You will only dash towards the boomerang if it is above solid ground.
When it's not, it returns to you as before.

Jumping shouldn't make a difference.
