As for parrying, turns out you can't just press the button. Make sure you hold it, the timing is much looser than I initially thought once I figured that out.
I thinkt he biggest problem I had with parrying is I was never sure if it was a hold from first click or a tap then hold or a double tap, and trying to test different reactions seemed to get the same result, so either my rhythm is WILDLY OFF (which is totally possible), or the system could use some tweaks. I tried looking for a revisit to re-read the tooltip I had missed to read it again but I couldnt find it.
Largely attribute it to trying to rush things to play as many demos as possible during the Next Fest and my brain being mush on reading comprehension by this point.
As for the Next Fest sentiment... I get it. Because so many developers pull their demos down and it's kind of sad. Especially since there's more and more submissions each event, but the event doesn't get any longer. Not everyone has unlimited free time or energy to spare to play as many games as possible during such a period of time. So I end up missing a bunch of them, cause the demos get pulled down before I even have a chance to get to most of the games I download.
Thankfully this one kept the demo up. I don't even wishlist the games that remove their demos.
You now have me thinking about an array of games I've been watching over the past few Next Fests, and which ones vanished and died off quickly, vs games I still have the demo of in my library 8 months later because I havnt gotten around to it... Specifically because of two games that kept updating their demos, long after the events ended.
I still havnt gotten the time to even buy those games yet, but I'm going to push them higher up my list now that you mentioned that.
You've clearly not played many games with a fishing mechanic. This game has nothing on games like the first Shenmue, or even Final Fantasy VIII's GF boosting mechanic. Those would break your hands.
I found this game to be hilarious and true to their brand. A controller definitely helps with playing it also. I read the prompt at the start that said it was better with a controller and thought I could just get by without. The timings seemed a little off using a keyboard, so I next day ordered a controller to plug in and play with. Much better after that.
I did find it awkward when figuring out how to continue the story, not knowing I needed to fish a few of each type to trigger the statue and trying to talk to npcs without picking up ingredients was a pain.
Overall, I felt like the demo wasn't long enough to showcase much of what they had to offer, but I'm eager to see the finished result.
I think some contrast comparison here is Dave the Diver. They also had a bunch of mini-games that were associated to different lures and types of fish. There were specific mechanics I avoided that other people found easy and vice versa. Example; I avoided sharks, I couldnt seem to turn fast enough to handle them, but other players handled them fine.
Dave the Diver also had a serious button mashing problem, even though a lot of the mechanics were supposed to be timed button clicks. They either didnt translate well in tutorial, or didnt make sense in a live situation when surrounded by predators.
I'm not sure how I feel about "More Fishing Action Games" after playing Dave, and that is deeply coloring my review of this.
