Did anyone like this game?
Like everyone else I played The Dark Descent and a bunch of other horror games. I bought A Machine For Pigs two hours ago thinking it would be an awesome birthday gift to myself. I, so far, think I'm right? It's not as bad as all the terrible reviews.
Just started Chapter 5, I had one isolated incidient within two hours of playing, and that one incident scared me so bad I quit for now. What does everyone think?

I think it's still the scariest game I've ever played. I haven't beat it yet, but the buildup in this game is amazing, along with the audio design. I love how long they spend slowly setting up the tense atmosphere, and it just keeps building and building.

I like it a lot! Like you (Ashley1991) I'm now little over 2h into the game. Just past the creation of "Compound X" I'm taking it really slow trying to not miss a thing. I liked the immersive setup to the whole story in the Manor a lot and the plot thickes as you go deeper. If you read all the fragments of the diary and listen to the voice recordings it adds a lot to the flair of the setting. Not to mention the constant feel of dread even though there is none at that particular moment is amazingly well done.

I also thought it was a well made horror game. It's certainly less tense than the previous game, but story-wise it is definetely superior. The built-up is slow, allowing you to really soak up the atmosphere. Especially this mansion in the beginning, which seems so normal at first, until you see the machinery. Great soundtrack and voice acting which all contributes to the immersion. I don't want to spoil anything but the game keeps this pace until the end; it doesn't cave in towards the end. Enjoy your remaining few hours.

Thanks for the answers! I continued playing some more and have realized everything you guys have said is true, the plot is amazing, I find that some of the notes are particularly gross (the one about the person who "sneezed" their teeth out was amazing). The build up is also well done, very well done. I agree with the story being better than the first game. I don't know why people hated this so much. About the voice acting, it does add to the immersion. I thought in the Dark Descent that Daniel's voice was innocent compared to the things he'd been up to, but Mandus has a freaky quality that I can't get over. Can't wait to get to the end, I'm also taking it slow though! I'm on Chapter 12.

This game is not scary in the least it has tense moments but no really frightning aspects. Its more like Amnesia: The Hallway Simulator. It's not a bad game in any respect though it just shouldn't have Amnesia in the name.

All the bad reviews were from people expecting The Dark Descent 2, and i'm MORE than glad they decided to lend it to TCR and got something a bit different, or i would rather play some free custom story instead of a over-priced-all-of-the-same scare fest.
I loved the Dark Descent as all the Penumbra series, but Machine had a bigger impact on me than Dark Descent, i don't know why and what they did, but i had to take 5 breaks half into the game because of the tension it growth on me. No other game did the same, and by my side, it's a great thing. One of the best game i've ever played, hands down. It's still in my mind and body no matter it's silent in my library from almost an year, unplayed.

I didn't like Dark Descent and I love A Machine for Pigs.

Have to disagree. Machine for Pigs abandoned so many of the elements that made Dark Descent enjoyable, tense and actually scary. Instead, the scripted jumpscares and crap story make for what was in my opinion one of the biggest disappointments of last year. If you're a fan of generic first-person puzzles and get scared really easilly, I can understand why you'd like this game. As for me, however, I expected a lot more from the once legendary company: Frictional Games and I'll have many more harsh words for them if they make the same mistakes that they did here in their upcoming sci-fi horror game SOMA.

This game wasn't made by Frictional. Also, it is not as if the original was that scary.

I love Machine for Pigs. Not as good as The Dark Descent, but still great in its own right.

Well, I liked this game better than the orginal. Much better plot, better main character, less enemies make encounters meaninfull unlike the orginal were u had constanly interrupt the game for hide for minute doing notting. Well it's not as scary as orginal, but I liked it better that way.

This game definitely cut the Amnesia audience in half. I didn't mind the game, although I was expecting more from it I did enjoy it. Story was good, but didn't make me fear or be afraid of any events that happened in the game. Compared to The Dark Descent, this game flopped as it failed to deliver a lot of what made the first game such a pheonomal horror hit.

Political anachronism at its worst. Not even scary. Stay far, far the hell away from this one if you liked the original.

Nope, it's garbage. I liked the first one but this was uninstalled just as fast as I installed it. A cookie cutter pile of trash. sincerely disappointed in this game because I really enjoyed the first.
