Which Amnesia game should I play first?
I would normally play the first game first, but it's hard to tell whether this game is actually a direct sequel to Dark Descent or not. A lot of reviews also say that this one is simpler, and that Dark Descent is more exciting, so I think it may be better to play A Machine for Pigs first.

Are the stories of the two games related? Will anything in Dark Descent be ruined if I've already played A Machine for Pigs, or is there anything in A Machine for Pigs that I won't understand if I haven't played Dark Descent?

Both games are 100% unrelated, except for one line in A Machine for Pigs that references Prussia (Where The Dark Descent happens). Just know that AMFP is NOT a sequel to DD. Different protagonists, different location, different enemies, different setting.
So you can play them any order you like.
Just keep in mind that the two games are VERY different.

Play TDD first then AMFP.

Once you get TDD installed their are many great Custom games available for download free on ModDB and a few on steam that are excellent.
I think of AMFP more of a Custom Game that they released as a comercial standalone product.

Thank you both.
It really dosen't matter as they are both radically differen't. There is a very clumsy attempt to Shoehorn a connection between them but they should really be treated as completely seperate entities (Think Halloween III).

I'd like to think of TDD and AMFP as two completely different games, so it doesn't really matter too much, though AMFP does have a few (albeit indirect) references to TDD that you would not understand if you had not played it. In any case I would recommend TDD as a start to everyone, as it is one of the best entries in the survival horror genre you could play.
Well true yes, but many have been dissapointed with part Two because it is a completely differen't feeling and no where near as scary. Amnesia 1 is a true Horror Game whereas part 2 is mostly exposition and a LOT of reading. The connections between the Two games are at best awkward and extremely forced. The name is what confused (and infuriated) many people.

I would play Dark Descent and then when it tickles your fancy play Dark Descent again, there's no reason to subject yourself to A Machine For Pigs unless you're in to punishing yourself or endurance gaming.

........but if you are a completist then go ahead with part 2. Just forget that it's called Amnesia and you will enjoy it
