How do you navigate through the city?
Because it's becoming quite the pain to get from one place to another.

I totally agree, the game is missing a grand map feature with also a kind of register where you have been and where not ( houses you "visited" )

I regarly break in 3 times in the same house just because the game is quite a maze and i don't know where i am exactly

Well , you need to memorize the paths, the map does not help much.

When i get to a side quest i dont know how to enter , i just watch on youtube , honestly , instead of "the city" , they should have called it "the maze".

Haven't had many issues with it... I stick mainly to the rooftops (with a few times I need to drop to the ground). The map helped me tremendously becuase it highlights stuff on the same level as myself so I can see how far I can get on the rooftops and see what buildings connect to two streets on the chance they have an egress between areas. Just wish you could get around to Ector's place from up high instead of having to drop to the Clocktower square and go counterclockwise.

Shame you can't write notes on the maps, like the previous Thief titles allowed :/

It's really not that hard. Sure I spent 11 hours in the city alone (claims my game) but that's because I had fun exploring it. I can get anywhere without even looking at the map now.

The main issue, as I see it, is that it's not entirely an "open-world" city. There are a bazilion of those pesky doors, windows and gates- that all lead to a specific section of the city. This is a pain, because there's usually only one of those.
EbonHawk 8. mar. 2014 kl. 20:43
Yep, agree. Some way to designate the difference between what are windows that go into a house, versus ones that function as "connectors" between separate areas would go a long way toward making this a better title. I can remember only about 3/4 of the time which ones go where, then I press E and get the animation, then go inside, run around for a minute....and there's nowhere to go. ARRRGHHH!!! Hate it.

At least have them marked on the map for goodness' sake. Have the window have a little swirly icon like the Chapter starts, or main section changes. Have some consistency ffs. It's not too much to ask that a window that leads into just a house and one that's a connector look noticeably different. I don't think so anyway.

And by all means, fix the map where there's this big open thoroughfare between areas on the map...and there's a damn wall across there in the actual game!!! C'mon!! Not cricket.

Just minor gripes though, but I'd be a darn sight happier if those were updated.

I guess you just have to memorize it.

What about people in the street who talk about areas where loot can be found? I have no idea where those areas are. I'm not sure if they're hinting at later story missions or if these are opportunities to pick up extra loot in The City.

I only know about one overheard dialog actually leading somewhere, but it was part of a sidequest. There might be others. Just like there's a text somewhere that mentions something about a "painting with a button for an eye".... I actually found the painting and button days before coming across the text.

Oh wait, there was one other. One of the conversations mentioned a ring "hiding in a crack beside a chimney" and I found it outside on a ledge behind the chimney...but close enough.

Getting near windows gives hints at collectible or valuable loot locations throughout the city (like one conversation about Lady Marigold having one of those "awful serpent bracers") and they are difficult to locate until you start paying attention to the mini-areas of the map. The one near the Crippled Burrick mentions the area where a cook can be found who has a valuable set of cutlery and it mentions the street where his house may be found...

Well you can check a grand map by pressing F1 on keyboard and select which objective you wanna mark

Was looking for something like this, what a shame that the keymapping option doesn't show this, smh.

I navigate the city with the utmost ease, swooping gracefully from one location to another.

I never get spotted, never need to visit the same place twice, unless it's essential.

I don't know what all the fuss is about...

P.S. Yesterday I ran the 100 metres in 9.1 seconds...

...oh heck, I've been dreaming again!

My actual approach is to spend half an hour looking for the start point, along with much cursing due to those daft windows. Sometimes I have a beer to soothe my ragged nerves.

I agree entirely with the comments about the load screen windows. At least have the prompt 'Do you want to go to the South Quarter' pop up on screen like the mission start points, rather than having to go through the levering bit, with sinking heart, only to have to turn around and do it again to get back out.

Not all of us have photographic memories.
