*Spoilers* The ending?!?!
So wtf is up with the ending does Erin ultimately die? We find the claw that has been thrown back up and there appears to be foot prints heading away from the ledge, so is she alive or dead?....It's kind of a buzz kill to be trying to rescue her only for such a cliff hanger ending. The story didn't feel very thief like at all but the ending really just didn't do it for me. Sure i'll get flamed or told I just don't understand but hell it's an opinion. Anyway if anyone wants to take a crack at explaining it i'd appreciate it.

At the end she needs the claw so garret reaches for the claw. While reaching for the claw he decides to steal the rings/book off Orion (see Garret is a klepto and can't stop himself) at the last second he uses his will power to give up the loot and toss Erin the claw at which point hes knocked out by a magical explosion that again targeted Erin. Erin or infused Erin or what ever climbed back up and left. No longer needing the claw or the life she had with Garret. See he betrayed her by going for the loot. Now Erin is out in the world and could be infused with Primal Powers still. Unknown really. What is known is the stone and book are mission. So in the end Garret's klepto tendencies left him with nothing but money and his collection.

See you basically are going along with my line of thinking but I get that Garrett is thief and has been in previous games etc but why after going through all that to redemm himself in her eyes would he do that? it just seems out of character and stupid. Oh well.

would he do what? try to steal the book/loot instead of the claw?

yes try to steal the book instead of the claw...i get why he would do it...because he's a thief and has to take things, but a) he willingly gave it away one time before when he thought it would lead him to basso and erin and b) he's spent the whole game trying to track down erin...so why he would even consider grabbing the book is odd to me.

I don't know it just felt like the whole game was supposed to be about him redeeming himself to erin and realizing he did care about things (namely Basso and Erin) other than just taking things and then the ending kind of spat all over that....even if he makes the right choice in the end it just felt like the ending was kinda trying to be too clever. Sometimes a simple ending is better.

Agreed. I also didn't get the sudden transition from being in the hold of the ship to outside there.

and why would Garret want to steal the Book instead of giving the claw to Erin? After he saved Erin, he could take the Book either. And not just the missing details, what makes this ending....ehhm....incomprehensibl.. but it was...quick....i had the feeling, this ending conclusion was made on a line production in a factory. And the whole story Garret is gone trough....it was because of the emotions and feelings for Erin...but the ending had no emotions in it.

Honestly I didn't care about the ending. Because it was about Erin. I was so sick and tired of that girl. So all I hope for is that she won't return in another game. It would have been better if she had died. In a way, I think it was her time and that she deserved it. She was evil. Other than that, she was a waste of time. It would have been better to focus on a story around Garrett. Especially since this was supposed to be a reboot.
I could kind of compare it to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. There was too much focus on the Green Goblin in that one, while there was not enough about Peter himself. Regardless, Erin is a b*tch and she is most responsible for making the game unnecessarily slow and dull, in the parts she were "controlling" the scenes and which should have been skippable cut scenes.

Thinking a bit deeper though, you could argue that the game wasn't about Erin at all, but only Garrett. And that the neglect of Erin was a manifest of Garrett's (egoistic) personality. Because he's a master thief, and not a humanitarian. Or "savior", as he tells the Queen of Beggars (I think it was? Her, or Orion - only watched that cut scene once). So that would make it even more terrible if Erin was to reappear in a sequel, because it would force Garrett to be someone that he isn't. And people would HATE that game. Including me.

Ohhh you are a true hearthels, rigorous Emogirl hater bastard....du you? :cwalker::hoji_smile: Hehe :D But yes I think the reason why the whole story is going about Erin is, because they wanted to grab something from the earlier games, but do not wanted to follow the original story parts with the hammerites. Because i think Erin was the little kid, Garret had caught on pickpocketing in the end of Thief 3. :)

I do not agree with you completely, because i think there was never a huge focus on Garret himsels, maximum 1-2 cutscenes or letters from the keepers what we could find in Thief 1-2-3 (but more likely in 3) But i have to admit, i like the way you are thinking...in a wider and deeper spectrum in the possibilities. :lampoff:

He is not such a klepto. Garret wasn't "trying to steal the book and the ring instead of throwing the claw to Erin", he was trying to complete the ritual by activating the book with the ring, for he was about to pass out and he didn't trusted Erin enough to let her end the ritual herself.

So, he completes the ritual, tosses the claw and passes out. Upon waking up, he faces the abandoned claw clenched into the wood and footprints indicating Erin saved herself but went away without him. She had forgiven him for his actions, but she also lost her trust on him, as again he did not trust her entirely.

He saved the city and also saved Erin, but neither the citizens nor Erin stood by his side in the end. The remained a mere shadow as he always had been.

Thank you, that was a really well written comment of the kind we need more on Steam forums. :)
