Night/Day cycle?
From a lot of gameplay videos I've seen, there's an actual in-game clock that the player has to follow for night & day so clearly it isn't tied to quests. (After you complete that one mission that introduces the night hunters.)
Yet some reviews I've seen says it is tied to quests, which is it exactly?

edit :
Time DOES flow normally after you finish the mission that introduces you to night hunters.

I believe that some quests instantly forward you to dawn or dusk, but the time between missions flows normally.

Can someone confirm this? It's a dealbreaker for me if it isn't actually dynamic.

There is a Steam review where the poster talks about the day/night cycle and how it is not a "real" cycle in that you cant just stand around and do nothing watching the sun set. It is dependant on quest progress from what I read. So for example you will never be on a quest where you begin to run out of sunlight unless it was scripted for you to run out of sunlight.

What about during freeroam, though? I'm fine with time being locked during missions, but it'd be a bit terrible if it didn't even progress when you weren't engaged with something. I'd check it myself, but I don't quite have the cash for a new release right now, so I'm kinda just leeching off everyone else's excitement.

I have the game but are waiting till later this morning to play with a friend so cant comment on freeroam. I am sure someone else will chime in with something more definitive as this was a major selling point.

Hopefully there'll be a mod along the lines of State of Decay's 'Real Time Clock' mod. This will not just slow time progression to an actual 24hr cycle, but also allow for editing the world time on the fly. The way time passes in the game at the moment is ridiculous.

The videos I've watched actually shows the the day changing to night in free-roam mode.
I understand that the first few story-missions they throw you actually stops the flow of time but after you complete them, the time will flow normally again. Which is why you get the "good night, good luck" warning before night happens.
But I haven't actually bought the game yet so I can't test out how long the ingame day/night cycles are compared to real time?
I really want it to have a dynamic night/day system ...

definitely I want a solid answer before I purchase the game. In free roam is there a dynamic day night cycle or is it quest tied.

There is real time, but only when you doing something. Just standing not affect clock, but when I just run and kill 1 zombie, it passes 5 minutes.

Ahh I see so it is actually a working clock & not tied to quests?
Honestly if this is the case, the reviews are quite misleading.

Although I'm not sure if I like this 'time only progresses if you're doing something'
I feel like it would make it less immersive mmmm

Kinda weird if that's true, though. Not often that games will pause time just because you're not doing anything. Maybe the game only displays time in five-minute chunks? Either way, glad that there's some form of time system.

Just tried, special for this thread.
Standing for 10 minutes - no effect. Run and kill zombie in 1 minute - 5 minutes passes on clock.

Thank you for doing that haha!
Well it's better than having no time system at least.

So super weird. Still, thanks for checking it out for us. I really appreciate it.
