How can you call this open world "Open"?
I mean, seriously, I've seen the gameplay videos and it keeps bugging me, we've been trough this in Dead Island: it's just a linear small areas based world with probably long load times (because f*ck PC) when traveling between areas. Gearbox doesn't sell Borderlands as an open world game, why does Techland has to mislead us (AGAIN) with this open world nonsense? I just can see myself pre-purchasing another Techland title, not to mention the terrible buggy launch their games experienced.

Some people take liberties with the term and misapply it to games that open up after they have been completed. I've heard people(idiots and fanboys, mostly) claim that Dark Souls is an open world because you can go back and visit any area you've already opened up. The lack of rational deduction, or just basic reasoning skills, amongst the gaming community is staggering, and some studios take advantage of that.

Improperly using terms to fool the customer: yea thats called marketing, right?
You cant call your game open world if there is ever a loading stage on said world.
Its funny, I've never heard of this studio but it seems they already know all the scumbag tricks as the big boys

Wait it's not really open world? ♥♥♥♥ I know why you are frustrated and I agree with you.. GTA is open world... Dead island is definitively not. Oh well then I'm no longer interested buying it! :P

Small areas? I thought the worlds in Dead Island were pretty big myself.

hang on ppl..as far as I remember Techland did state that they came up with this new graphics engine they developed from scratch for DL so let's wait for devs to speak up abt it.

I've too asked about the map's size(in the "ask devs questions" thread); somebody should ask 'em about frequent load times and that type of sh!t :|

Also, the new engine being comparatvely light on resource usage should cover this thing up
Source: am myself a dev. (not a game dev. lol but yea am into core tech.)

Dead Island wasn't truly open but I wouldn't call the maps small.

One Area in Dying light is bigger than all the dead island areas combined so i would say thats quite big open world!

Are you saying this is not completely open world, like skyrim or fallout? This is more like thief, where you have freedom and some open world, but only per level? Please answer me? I thought this looked so good but if its not open world then screw this.

No this is open world there is just different areas and they are all huge, really huge i think there is like 2 or 3 areas so don't worry it is open world. And i heard somewhere that the loading times shouldn't take long.

Are they going to make it totally open once you beat the game? and, How big are the areas. It seems like it will be all missions. I would like some zombie killing action for no reason, not all for a mission. Just wondering.

Part of the definition of open world is that you can visit those areas very soon. If you have to beat most of the game to access them, then it's not actually an open world.

Dead island was open world, just not a seamless open world, and technically neither was Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, or even most of the GTA series, as you still had to load parts of the game world, wether indoors or outside.

Also just because they make you wait to go to certain area does not mean its not open world, thats really reaching for reasons to complain. GTA games have always cut off most of the world for a while, and some had to load between sections, even if it wasnt an obvious loading "tunnel".

Having a couple of small areas being inaccessible doesn't meant it's not an open world. But having the world segmented and then only delivering it in pieces along a linear progression is not an open world. I have no idea how this game will be, but if most of the world is inaccessible at the beginning, it's not open world.

Open world = going everywhere you want with no restricted areas.

Fallout 1 / 2 were true open world. You could finish Fallout 2 in 17 minutes if you knew where to go. Fallout 3 was almost open world but some regions were locked (I think) unless you did some quests. Like the Museum area in the Sout-West of the map that you couldn't reach I think. I don't remember well.

The GTA 3 and after series is kinda like open world but not really: crossing a bridge too early makes you super wanted. GTA 1 and 2 had different maps for each 'level' but those maps were fully open.

Dead Island has a linear gameplay but is almost open. Since the game is so linear you couldn't reach the lab from the begining for example.

Saints Row series are fully open map games.

It is not about loading time or I don't know what. It's about being able to reach all the areas of the game without restriction. It's about freedom, and potentially doing end-game quests right at the beginning of the game if you go at the right area.

I don't agree with that definition. Having a couple of small area locked for quests shouldn't negate the open-ness of the rest of the world.

Also, I just found out that Morrowind's main quest can be beat in under 4 minutes.
