It seems like Harran was an ancient city in Turkey. Dying Light probably does a Fallout-esque thing in which they kind of used an alternate timeline. Not a big change, but enough to where Harran is still a functional city today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harran

Oh, I see. I didn't pay attention to that... do you think Harran is maybe a fictional independent city-state, like Monaco or Singapore? It is only a couple of districts big, and then mountains/coast block it off.

Yes it could be it seems quite modern though it could be based on a city of Turkey near the coast.

I heard that they got the inspiration for Harran from modern-day Instanbul (formerly Constantinople). The city is the "gateway" between east and west and is on a major water crossing between the black sea and the Mediterranean sea. It also connects Europe with the middle east. One of the reasons they chose Instanbul as the inspiration is the mix of cultures from the east and the west.

That makes a lot of sense.

Look at these pictures of Istanbul

in-game you can find a globe with a blood drop on it.. I think it was somewhere in Africa but I'd need to check it

I thought it indicated where the game's set; they do seem to have modeled the city of Harran like Istanbul (by judging the provided pictures).

If it's in Turkey then how come the polish flag set around in Oldtown? In poland there is a section of Krakow called Oldtown so maybe it's there?

Techland is a Polish developper, so it wouldn't suprise me if they left some nationalistic tidbits around... T'was no different in Dead Island.
