What am I doing wrong?
I'm on First Assignment: 'Arm more devvices' and 'Prepare light traps for the night mission'.

A night has already gone by and another approaches. The thing I seem to get done is 'fixing' the lights on the poles in the railway station area.

There are two, and I've tried one of them, but eventually watched a video that showed how to get to the other one, and it looked reasonbably easy so I thought "Hey I'll do that one and at least hhave one victory in the basket to show off when I get home), but that wasn't what happened.

You're supposed to jump from a small ledge on a roof top and onto the ledge that sits on the top of the pole with the light bulb too. - The guy on the video mae approximately 7 or 8 tries before he had a bull's eye, but I've been going at it for so long I've lost count but I can tell by the change in light on the night sky that it's been a while - quite a whle at that!

There's a bush of sorts growing right beside the pole at the bottom, it's about a foot in diameter, and that bush's diameter is the closest I've gotten to the pole and the ledge I was supposed to catch and hawl myself onto so I could fix the light.

Of course I've tried timing my jumps differently, tried hitting Space just before I hit Shift and vice versa, I've tried waiting that fraction of a second longer before I hit Space and I've tried the opposite, but to no avail. Sometimes you can't tell the difference, metimes the result gets worse.

It would be a tedious thing to write about if it wasn't because my whole gameplay experience depends on me completing these quests, since there's be no more quests before I've completed these two - or this one, as the case may be. And now I'm at my wit's end, I simply don't know what to try next, but I can see that the way I'm currently going will not be likely to lead anywhere. Therefore I humbly thank you, whomever is willing to help and older guy get this mess out of the way so I can move on.

I know what you mean. When you need to jump to a pole from the top of the trainyard station (there is a small ledge from where you need to jump).
I have no tips, keep trying. Try to grab it.

If I'm understanding correctly your trying to get to the first light trap in the train yard. That being so get to the hole in the roof facing the light trap. Look down and you will see there is a spar sticking out from the roof. Line yourself up and run onto the spar. When you reach the end aim at the ledge your jumping too and hit jump. Hold down the jump key / button the whole time until your character has pulled himself up fully. Do not hit any movement keys / sticks as its quite easy to simply walk off the spar you jumped too. Instead just rotate to the button and job done.

If I had to guess what your doing wrong is either not aiming at what you want to grab onto or your not holding down jump to grab the spar, possibly both.

Try looking up just a little more when u jump and keep your eyesight at that level, look up just a little more than you think you need to.

You have two choices: One light trap by the overpass, another by the warehouse.

Pick the one by the overpass and climb up the wooden pole directly OPPOSITE it. Wait until the up arrow on the objective circle disappears (you are level with the objective) and then jump across / sideways onto the little ledge. Be sure your movement is facing toward the light trap as you jump, or you will jump up and over the bar, falling down into the blue trash bags.

It may take a few tries, but it is infinitely easier doing this one than the other. Once you flip this one on, the mission progresses.

Yeah, that's the spot. Alright, I'll keep trying. *sigh* :)

Well I have to hit W too, or I'll just be jumping on the spot. But for the rest, I know what you mean. I've tried all the combinations.

Well, as I mentioned, I've kind of tried all thecombiinations I can think of, and I often - mostly - land with my finger still on the Space bar as well as the W button, though the lattter differs some as it's mainly necessary to get off the legde/spar.

I actually tried this because it was what got me over the first time during the test run. I had problems there too and almost thought I might not make it. But once I did, I could re-do it most of the time. No so this time, however - but then, I haven't made it even once yet.

I think this was the one I first tried. But I couldn't climb the pole, so I tried to reach it by running back up the hill side and then over the large driving lane with all the cars sittinig like in a traffick jam, and when I got to the last final distance, it happened like you mentioned, I couldn't time it correctly and fell down repeatedly. I was too far from the pole with the trap light anyway, so when I saw that other video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4hovnnOWMM
it looked so easy so I decided to go and do that first. However, it wasn't easy at all and I still haven't made it.

But I guess there's no easy answer to how I can beat this one, only try, try, and try again - another 50 times or more, if I must.

You know, it's funny, because when you keep failing, at first it makes you try and fine tune everything you do, but then you enter a phase where you get slobby, alomost iindifferent, then you enter another phase where you ger real phocused again, and then finally you just go through the motion without thinking much about what you do, like you're on auto - and in the past it's often been when I reached this phase I suddenly made it, and afterwards I'd have no idea what I did right or wrong, but everything would get easier after that. I think this is what I have to hope for now, otherwise the game is over for my part, lol.

Thanks for your inputs, guys. It did help even though it turned out to be what I've already been doing, because beig told you're doing it right is just as helpful as being told you're doing it wrong. It's not knowing that eats at ya. (Okay, not completely true, but you get the meaning, ^^.)

Back. Been at it since I wrotew the above3 and still no progress. I can say this much: If I change my tacticts in the slightest, results get even worse, meaning I land even further from the pole with the ldge.

Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. Some people are writing how this game is even impossible. I don't believe that, though.

There's also one who writes "What are all talking about it's EASY! I got it in the first try."

Yeah, well if some have to be unlusky some also have to be lucky, rght?

If I don't find a cheat I'll not get any further with this game - sadly, because it's really fun and I alreaduy love it in spite of this problem.

So if somebody knows a cheat - one that'll make you float through the air so you can steer your way to the ledge that way, f.ex.... or one that can just tell me what I should've been doing but didn't do because I didn't know it - I'd very very grateful.

I so hate to throw money out on something that I know it would've kciked ass... oh, sorry,: kicked buttocks.... to have.

But bye to Dying Light for now. For the rest of you, continue to have fun! ;)

I love stories from bad games. So thank you for this it made me smile:-)

Watch a youtube video of someone else doing it if you're still having a problem

Now I see how awkward it is to play this with a controller....

Umm, just do like in that video, but try to aim yourself so you fall slightly short of the ledge, so you can hold space and grab on to it as you reach it, also the guy in that video hasn't really got a good idea about parkour, aka free running, in other words, you have to learn to incorperate sprinting into your parkour, to cover greater distances when jumping etc

Lol. Good it made you smile. I kind of hoped it would. :)

Yeah, I know I wrote I was gonna give it the finger for now, but when you really like something iy isn't as easy as just walking away. So now I've decided to find a cheat, No way I'm gonna let a minor thing ruin a whole game for me (and the funny thing is I can jump quite easily everywhere else, just not at that one spot, grrrrr!!). - So nope, I'm going to look up the same cheat that you use in most games...

You know, when people make videos, often about mods they've created, with new content and stuff, they'll use this cheat that allows you to float through the air and through dorrs and what not. They don't do it to cheat, they do it to show us what they've created.

Now I'm gonna make a little creation of my own, if I can find the cheat and it works in this game...!

That's funny you should mention that. When I bought Black Flag and watched some videos about it, some of the reviewers would say that it is way easier to play if you have a controller (that is an xbox360 - or Xbox One?? - controller). But I've heard the same about some other games and always felt find using keyboard and mouse.

Then fast forward to Dying Light: I got problems - or rather: ProbleM. And I began watching some videos, and whattaye know, I noticed that a lot of these guy are usin controllers (in the video I've posted further above the guy's using an Xbox OIne controller, I believe)!! So of course I asked myself if maybe it is easier to jump with a controller? Still, I can't really convince myself about this.

But it's funny that I've read and heart about all this controller hype, and here you are mentioning how awkward it is playing with one. lol

As far as I could see, he was thinking about it and every time he tried something new. It's true he doesn't use sprinting a lot, but then - and you can take it from me - it doesn't really matter much if you sprint of not.

What I have found to matter the most - in fact, it can make the difference between landing half way to the ledge and landing only short of a feet from it - is if you time sprint and jump to happen more or less simultaneously. So in saying that, I guess I agree with your statement. :)

But I have been to the bridge. I've scaled the whole thing trying to find a way I could jump on to the other light trap pole, but I saw in the video that if you do the first one the other one won't even require you to climb up.

But I sense you're talking about something else. If it's about jumping, I'm not really that worried, because I think this particular jump has become something of a "neurosis" for me.

I wish I knew how to make and upload videos of my gamepolay. I'd do it without regrets because maybe onlookers would be able to see what I cannot see that I'm doing wrong, or not doing.

.........
PS. Even if I do use that cheat - provided I find it or someone mentions it to me - I wouldn't be satisfied with getting through the game that way. I'm too proud, and that pride in me would drive me back to do the jump over and over until I get it right.

It's just that I also want to have fun, you know? And I don't consider 7 hours spend non-stop running in a loop from the cottom of the pole to a stone fence, jum upon it, then jump on to a roof, run a few years to the hole in the roof and jump down and walk/run on the chickenwire and onto the ledge, jump towards the ledge on the pole, landing at the bottom of the pole and start over again....over, and over and over and over...again, for 7 hours, only interrupted by a short stop to post here, and to go to the restroom, and once to raise my head listening to see if those who rang my doorbell really were visitors or just the postman wanting someone to let him in.

And mind you, that's without whiskey!! (Hehe.). No, really, that's not my idea of fun, and if I can help it I'll not be paying for it either. - To return regularly to see if you can beat this partular jup, sure. But not to see nothing else of the game but that little sequence and being swarmed by zombies every now and then (during night time).
