The dodge skill and firecrackers I find invaluable so try and grab them as soon as you can. Weapons do last a lot longer later on in the game as you learn to care and maintain them so weapon breakage isn't so much of an issue.
Guns are a double edged sword due to the noise they make and the type of zombies (virals) they attract. Use sparingly.
Enjoy the game.. :)
certain areas like the electrical station(early quest) and others where you can get what seems like 100s of them in a small area and just cook the hell out of them with molotovs. tons of loot and experience for low level characters. just try to stay above the groups on cars, obstacles, buildings, etc lure them in and it's barbecue time.
i found a few electrical fences very early where you can lure a few small groups at a time through and get some extra early loot.
make sure you go out of your way to get as many air drops as possible early too. fastest way of leveling early.
Then do an end run through the opening and up onto the transformer and continue burning and winning.
Usually get 1~2 power levels each time it restocks.
I had a bad time. The main character is incredibly weak and ill-prepared when you start the game.
Now that I'm older and wiser, I suggest you avoid combat entirely until you get a couple points in the Agility skill tree.
At the very least, focus in acquiring and mastering the Dodge skill, it's the first one (agility). It can save your bacon even if you get mobbed and will remain useful throughout the game.
Grapple, Dropkick, Vault and Escape/Instant Escape are all agility skills, incredibly useful in combat.
While they can be used to attack, they are mainly defensive skills. Once you learn how to use them, your fights will become much faster, easier and fun, and you will level up combat much quicker than focusing on it from the get go (and getting your ass kicked repeatedly).
Molotovs are an excellent method to kill a bunch of zombies and earn lots of combat points very quickly, but keep in mind that while it's very useful to level up combat, it won't give you any actual combat experience.
Of course you should use it often, just don't rely too much on that.
Most important though, do not advance the main quest too fast. Take your time levelling up and chase all the airdrops you can.
And yeah, Alwayas have a plan, mine usualy incvoves fiightin in open areas as my weaopons are strong. Fight near something you cah quickly clumb at all times.
