Also you can easily avoid them if you run or jump... unless there is a big group.. but you aren't supposed to run to a big group because they'll grab you, that's how it's supposed to work
The zombies don't just grab onto you, they unfairly and unrealistically lock you into an animation which cancels whatever you were doing previously. This makes power attacks kind of stupid, this makes the whirlwind attack entirely pointless since it's only useful against groups and you can't ever get off a power attack in a group without being grabbed out of the animation.
It takes control out of the player's hands almost constantly. I have to set the counter button to be mouse4 and hold it down constantly during a fight, so every three seconds I'm throwing a zombie to the ground when they try to lunge at me.
It doesn't add to the fun of the game, is what I'm saying.
It's not about making it 'easier', it's about making it make sense and be more fair. Having them be able to grab you is fine - just don't make it so I can't cut their arms off when they try to do it!
Grabbing IS a rare thing, already. Look, if you have the Reversal stun, you can spam the F key and it will usually hit during the animation, just before, or right after. So, it is almost a universal save. The only way it won't completely help you is if 3 enemies or so are trying to grab you at once. If that is happening, what the heck are you up to (as you deserve to die in real life, but DL may be more lenient)? If that is happening, the solution would be, switch to a two hander and do a 180 or 360, but I usually don't use a two hander, so I don't allow myself to usually get into that situation.
At night, everything is a lot faster, and if you get grabbed, now it is serious trouble. On Normal you can still get away with it. But beyond that, then you deserve to die.
Already the player character is way, way more overpowered than in Dead Island original. So are the enemies, but at least I'd say thru Hard, the player has the long-term edge. And no mission requires such risk that you have to do something idiotic.
So, if you are getting grabbed up the wazoo, I'd suggest you start practicing the ways to get out of it, using the various skills, in smaller groups of enemies. Otherwise, you will have no hope. Not recommended to get grabbed by multiple enemies in a crowd, especially above Normal Difficulty.
Thats not the point. The point is that it completely breaks the flow of melee combat. I'm swinging for a zombie's head and then suddenly, halfway through the 1 second swing animation, im instantly grabbed. Locked in a QTE cutscene. There's no real wind up or telegraph that they're going to start the animation, they just do. And you cant dodge or avoid it because once the cutscene triggers, you're stuck.
It's annoying because it takes a few seconds to break out of it, which means the horde i've been expertly kiting and picking off one by one will have surrounded me, and be ready to grab me again, and again.
So i have to parkour onto a rooftop and start again.
And i don't care if it's "realistic", that's a dumb excuse. Zombies aren't realistic, especially ones with superpowers like volatiles.
Overall i like the game. It's fun, some of the best parkour mechanics in any game, and they're very consistent. But zombie grabs make certain weapons completely useless, which is a shame because melee is usually very fun. And i don't get to fully use the melee system because some of my options are just bad.
You can dodge their attacks. But you do it BEFORE they grab you. Also, don't get yourself surrounded. Of course they will grab you. And you can see when they are about to grab you if you are looking at them. They lunge towards you, then you dodge. You just need practice. I pretty much never get grabbed, except when my camoflauge wears off in a crowd and I don't move away fast enough. That's entirely my own fault, and can be avoided.
Yes, this is true if you are a bit late with a swing, although it can be hard to predict. Also, if your weapon handling is a bit low, they can grab you as your melee weapon is still swinging. My melee weapons late in the game / after the game ended all had good handling (at least 80, often around 100) which will help. Also, as your agility and power levels up, you dodge and react a bit faster. It does take some practice.
You can grapple them away before they grab but I have never mastered the grapple skill. If you can, then you can stop their grab mid-way almost every time.
ETA: forgot to mention the quick break away skill. If you haven't bought it yet, do as soon as you can. You can break a zombie grab immediately with it.
