permanent viral attacks?
Since returning from Rais with some Antizin I am perma chased by virals (the fast runners that can climb). Earlier a few would show up after an explosion or alarm, but now they are chasing me all the time, what gives? Makes normal questing pretty hard.:madelf:

When you advance far enough in the story, 'Toxic Biters' start appearing. They have green fumes. Killing these Biters with any kind of fire will spawn Virals for some damn silly reason. If the toxic Biter's head explodes from fire (like from a molotov), then they'll infect other nearby normal Biters with toxic damage and they'll start vomiting, and if they've all been molotov'ed, when they die they will spawn even more Virals.

Just to clarify on one of the comments above, I have never had an "explosion" attract virals from simply using a weapon modded with electricity or fire. I am on hard mode.

Then you haven't gotten very far at all in the storyline, or you're just not paying attention.

Killing a Biter that has toxic fumes with a melee weapon that crits with a fire property will spawn Virals. And killing normal Biters or Virals with a weapon that crits with both a fire and toxic property (e.g. Puke 'n' Nuke blueprint) will spawn Virals.

If it's a weapon that does fire and electricity (e.g. God Hammer blueprint), then when crit'ing normal Biters, Virals won't spawn. If it's a toxic Biter, Virals will spawn.

However it occurs, fire element + toxic element = Viral spawn. Puke 'n' Nuke is no bueno on Nightmare.

That's precisely the reason why I'd just trash that elemental crafting system:
It's not beneficial, except for ice and bleeding that do no harm.
I'd much rather like to see a system in place that either adds new usages to weapon types or alters the way they can be used so that it's not just about the "best" crafting version but about a situational preference that can be created or made use of.

a little late to the party but same issue here. I'm about 24% story mode but 38% side quests. all basic weapons but i got the upgrade for finishing move when they're down or climbing to one kick em.
I was doing the "wolfsbane" collect toxic herbs. The quest says visit the area marked on map, but theres nothin on my map. so i found a post that said go south of the tower.
i found a wolfsbane but couldnt grab it because virals spawned, 3 of them. i got on a rock and head kicked the first two, before the 3rd came up to me 3 more spawned, i kicked heads off 3 more and 4 more spawned!
I had about 7 or 8 virals at one time chasing me! killed a few more escaping to a safe house and when i tried ot leave the safehouse, 3 more spawned right away!
this has to be a bug, but i can;t figure how to stop it. my last quest was the binoculars one which went smoothly.
a little disappointed this bug exists so many years after release, and if it means starting the game over after 20+ hours, then i'll say im done with the game. I wont chance this happening again 20 hours into a game and if i cant do a play through of the game, the its as good as a waste of money.

This is not a bug in the way you are thinking, though it is partially bugged. There is a random event in the slums- a small store with the alarm tripped. For some reason, if you visit that area and don't turn off the alarm, you will perma attract virals periodically, as they are drawn to the alarm. Once you get camo, it's easy to complete, you just have to camo up and go around back to the alarm box.

This area is close enough to the tower that you've probably tripped it at some point while going home or out to scavenge, and been far enough away that the sound is not playing.

This for sure seems to be a bug of some type, I have had it happen in a previous game, and my present game I was doing all the sidequests I could before the night cycle begins. I claimed all 11 initial safehouses, found the gun for Dawud and raided his pawnshop and was starting on the last sidequest (the Fake Antizen) when 5 or 6 virals just start spawning around me, anywhere I am. Kill them, and about 10 or 20 seconds there is a new group. Groups have been as large as 8 or 9 but usually about 5. Makes progressing in the story all but impossible; and certainly no fun.

this is happening to me rn, no matter where i am or what im doing or where i go i will always get chased by virals, i come out of tower get chased,and this is even more weird how virals look they still have pretty normall face, but for me the classic zombies turn viral even those toxic ones they just run and try to punch you to death.

oh i just realised, this isnt a game bug or anything. its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ community challange, you can see it in ur *missions*.

I'm having the same issue, virals have gone from something I could avoid to now the map is just full of them. I can't run more than 100m without getting about 20 of them after me.

Same here. Can't do anything without attracting hoards of virals. If it's a 'community challenge' how do you get your character from not accepting it?

Hey, turned off 'community event' in options/online and the virals have stopped chasing me.

Virals will appear (in general) if you make too much noise or anything else in the world makes loud sounds.. such as slaughtering zombies with elemental/loud blunt weapons, destroying wooden roofs/doors, exploding gas tanks and obviously shooting with guns/explosive arrows etc.

This unannounced "community event", forced on every player by default, reduced the number of multiplayer users from a small handful to almost nil in the last two days.

Whose daft idea was it to force this event on all users and keep it forced active in all multiplayer games, regardless of user settings?

the difference between when op originally posted this and now is that back in 2015 it definitely wasn't a community event, i can see why quite a lot of people can be frustrated since this event wasn't announced in game but that was the way it's been for the longest time. Events are announced in the steam page and social media, if you scroll for one second down the game's launch button you can see that events are announced there too. I'm actually curious if techland got backlash in the steam forums when the event first released in the l4d2 x dl crossover, the difference is that most people should already know from atleast 2 weeks ago that there will be one event per week for 5 weeks straight, we are already at the 3rd week and people didn't know that this was an event / didn't know how to disable it community participation
