After I spawned again, I just ran straight for the crane, with what appeared to be plenty of time to do so and jump at the end.
I've got no clue as to why you shouldn't be able to do this.
Keep trying? Maybe it'll work for you at some point :)
As soon as you spawn, jump up on the crane arm and run for it.

I have seen many people complain that they can't complete certain parkour challenges in the game due to too low frame rate.
If this is the case, try dropping graphics setting, esp Draw Distance.
That solved it. I had to switch to my laptop, and while it's high end, it apparently wasn't good enough. Lowering the graphics settings fixed the issue with the crane jump.
