CPU Usage Fix to Increase FPS
Hi,

There are a lot of complaints regarding the "poor" performance of the game, this can be true to you and it depends on five main factors; your hardware, FOV, view distance, vram and cpu usage. All other setting make hardly any difference, except Shadow Map Size to performance.

I have my settings optimized for my rig and receive a constant 60fps with all settings at Max with with a few tweaks which I will get to. I took all FPS and GPU/CPU usage measurements with MSI Afterburner.

My specs;

GTX 970
i5-2500k @ 4ghz
8GB RAM
Windows 8.1

1. Hardware

I won't go into this too much, but if you don't meet recommended specs then there is little point complaining about poor performance. You won't receive a constant 60fps if you have a weak system.

2. FOV

Leave this on Vertical FOV Modifier + 0. Increasing does significantly lower fps, before I had it at 90 but it cut my fps by at least 5fps. It doesn't sound like a lot, but when you are a few fps away from a constant 60fps (with vsync) every fps count.

I find lowering the FOV to not have any negative game changing or IQ effect. Although this could be somewhat subjective.

3. View Distance

This makes incredible difference to FPS and the difference it makes in game is almost imperceptible.

Lower it to ZERO and get a huge FPS boost.

4. VRAM

You need 4gb or more to run this game properly with HIGH textures, anything lower than this will cause fps drops and lots of stutter. The difference between medium and high is not that much.

Unfortunately, Nvidia half-lied when they said the GTX 970 had 4GB of VRAM, it is actually 3.5GB. High textures take up the whole 3.5GB so this is why you get stutters with this card or with a card that has less than 4gb of VRAM.

Play with Medium textures.

5. CPU Usage

If you have a quad core CPU or higher the issue the game has is it uses the first core much more than the others, therefore core1 will be using 95%-100% while the others will be dragging there feet at 40-50% or less.

This CPU issue causes low fps and stutter and explains why changing settings in game makes little difference to FPS because it's not necessarily your GPU which is underpowered.

The solution? Set the game to distribute the CPU workload among all your cores rather than core1. I did this and got a 10+ fps boost.

There is a program called CPU control you can use to do this automatically. Search google for this program and it will be at the top of the search. When running dying light, ALT+TAB to your desktop open up CPU control and right-click dyinglight.exe.

Then ALL CPUs > 4 CPUs (or 6/8 depending on your CPU) then 1+2+3+4.

You can set the program to run at Windows start minimized and also add dyinglight.exe to it's profile using ADD TO SELECTED CPU PROFILE sp that you don't have to go through this every time you load the game.

As a side note, many other games suffer with the CPU usage issue i.e. Black Flag so this program can become very useful.

SUMMARY

1. Make sure you have recommended specs.
2. Leave FOV on Vertical Modifier +0
3. Put View Distance to 0
4. Play with Medium textures unless you have 4GB of VRAM (GTX 970 is actually 3.5GB)
5. Fix the CPU usage issue with CPU control

6.I noticed you are a pirate
7.Wait for a patch + drivers updates
8.♥♥♥♥ off pirate!
9.The 6 and 8!
I downloaded CPU Control the other day, and I was looking to use it. Totally forgot about it. Thank you for the reminder. Haha.

Personally, Dying Light runs smooth for me, aside from the occasional stuttering here and there. I have almost the same specs as you do, except I run Windows 7 64-bit. I have been playing the game on maxed settings. Anti-Aliasing, Shadows - Very High, View Distance maxed, Textures - high, AO and HBAO+. I turn stuff like motion blur off. I hate it.

If Dying Light wasn't running smooth, I would have waited until they patch it again. I can't stand anything less than 60fps. I notice it too much. I am glad it runs well for me.

And yeah, damn Nvidia and the 3.5GB fiasco.

The pirated version has been known to run horribly.

Some gamers just don't know their rigs limitations, I would go as far as saying some gamers expect their single nvidia 250GTX running on a two core CPU too run farcry 4 on max details at 60fps then complain the game is broken when they can't (proof on these very forums).

Budda-tap you have a good rig there and you seem the type of person who knows his gaming PCs but sadly too many pc gamers lack the knowledge to even update their drivers. No doubt this post will be ripped apart by trolls.

Thank you.

Hopefully some people will take notice of my tips and put them into practice, especially the CPU fix. It really makes a difference.
I take it op didn't meet the required specs, like purchasing the game.
I have a Nvidia 580GTX 1.5gb vram, quad core i5 running at 3.1 and 8Gb ram and I run with these settings...

1920x1080
Textures - Medium
View distance - 1 bar
AA - On
All the nvidia features are - Off
V-sync and Triple Buffering - On in nvidia control panel

Getting 60 fps most of the time with it going down sometimes. 60fps anyday over graphics
Hey, sorry to bother but I'm having an issue. I got cpu control and I start dying light but I don't see it anywhere on cpu control and I keep getting rests that aren't what I searched up on Google. Any advice?
Load up Dying Light before you load up CPU control. It should be there.

You download the program from here -

+1 nice done

Too true.

CPU-control doesn't work for me (running on W8 64 bit as admin, even with your instructions it does not work) PLUS you made your profile private because you pirated the game ? Bad move, bro. BUT, I found a better and maybe more complicated fix but it may give better effects - Proccess Lasso. Does exaclty same thing as CPU-Control + more.

My profile has been private for a long time, others were just trolling.

It's a shamer CPU control doesn't work for you. There are youtube videos of people using it for Dying Light and showing it to remove the CPU bottleneck.
