GTX 970 stuttering on high textures due to vram
I'm sure every gtx 970 owner knows about the 3.5 gb vram issue at this point. At first I didn't really care about it because I didn't think any game would use this much vram at 1080p but I was wrong. I originally believed that this game was just horribly optimized and that was the cause of this stuttering but it appears to be related to the vram issue.

High textures uses around 3.6 gb of vram while medium textures only uses around 1.7gb. If you own a gtx 970 and are experiencing this stuttering I encourage you to swap the textures to medium and see if it stops them like it did for me.

This is NOT a thread for poor performance as that is a whole different issue entirely. I am simply making this post to determine whether or not this is related to the vram issue.

Ok I have just finished testing the game on My friends and my PC's. Test done outside the tower, just looking around, standing still. Our cpus are all 4670k's at stock speeds. We used the same ram in each test.

GTX 780ti -3gb - Bus Width 384 bit - I have sli but turned it off for the test. - Stock clock.
GTX 980 - 4gb - Bus Width 256 bit - Stock clock.
GTX 970 - 4/3.5gb - Bus Width 256 Bit - Stock clock.

Dying Light VRAM Usage peak @ 1080 - High, No AA

3.42GB

The 780ti - Average fps : 69fps
The 980 - Average Fps: 67fps
The 970 - Average Fps: 57fps

Interesting how even though the 780 has 1gb less in Vram, the wider bus allowed for a better average fps; Even though the game topped out the 780ti's max Vram usage.

So it seems VRAM is a contributing factor, but more the Bus width than anything else.

Great work! Reason why the 780ti still rocks the 980 in some high res. Using 2x 780ti here and I get 85 fps on medium with everything on. 2.8gb vram. 1300core/3950mem

Vram is really over hyped. Just because people can see it fill up, they think if they go over it will crush their performance. I am def pushing my cards to the limit and have zero hiccups with 3gb using 4k.

The lower bus and 4gb ram was the reason why I didn't buy the 980.

Thats what makes it a mid range card.. if only that card had 384 bit bus it would be unleashed. The 256 is a huge bottle neck IMO.

One or two frames, when the 780Ti has over a years worth of driver maturity over the 900 series is far from "rocking".

I haven't noticed any stuttering on my GTX 970 since I lowered the view distance to about 25-33% and disabled the Nvidia DoF. I also don't notice any stuttering when my VRAM usage goes above 3.5GB. My card is the ASUS STRIX if that makes a difference and it's overclocked a little bit; memory clock is at 8000MHz

How do you think my 690 would perform? It only has 2GB VRAM, but an even faster memory bus than the 780ti... 384.6 GB/s vs 336 GB/s.?

I dont think bus width scales, So technically you have 256, as its a dual card.

OFC silly me :tgrin:

At this point i'm about ready to throw my 690 in the bin and buy a 980 anyway :tgrin:

If you are having FPS drops with other cards use a program like CPU control to force the game to use more than 1 core. If you dont do that then the game uses 100% of CPU core 1 and roughly 25% of the others causing a massive bottleneck. My issue is after using this fix.

worked for me with x4 965,

I get wicked stutter on my GTX 980 with High textures. Have to set it at Medium. Draw distance down to zero.

Really? on a 980?
I have everything set to max on my 980 and getting about 85fps average, no stuttering. You are the first person I have noticed complaining about stutter/performance using a 980.

I have aswell stuttering on my 980gtx. I can play without 1h after that stuttering comes. On medium there is no stuttering.

It's not due to vram. It's not actually using the vram, it's caching textures in it. It rotates textures as needed. Other things are at play here.

my gtx 670 doesn't have any issue at high lol so how come gtx 980 have issue?

That's right. I believe the game is doing a poor job of managing video ram/system ram. It's not your gpu's that are inadequate. I think it's just poor coding. That paired with poor CPU multi-core usage.

It's vram management is fine. It's caching textures. That's what the vram is for. If you don't have as much vram, it won't cache as many textures. As far as system ram - as long as there's no memory leak, which there isn't, using large amounts is also 100% fine.

Newegg and some other stores are taking returns (RMA) past 30 day window on gtx 970's

nvidia forums (hundreds of people on nvidia forums request refunds)
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/803518/geforce-900-series/gtx-970-3-5gb-vram-issue/233/

Why Nvidia's GTX 970 slows down when using more than 3.5GB VRAM
http://www.pcgamer.com/why-nvidias-gtx-970-slows-down-using-more-than-35gb-vram/

There is a group of guys who have started a petition against Nvidia and the 5 major sub-vendors, claiming they want a refund for their GTX 970 cards because of false advertisement.

They have about 530+ supporters atm.

https://www.change.org/p/nvidia-refund-for-gtx-970

And just to clear things up for those that think this is no big deal, it is a major thing and it will not go away in a day or a week, Nvidia cheated all of the GTX 970 buyers, by false advertisement, companies have gone to court for less..!

And no one should be able to get away cheating their customers like this, Nvidia you're going down!

Very happy with this quick fix
