does grapple actually work?
I got grapple considering it seemed like it would be useful for throwing zombies into spikes and other environmental hazards. However i've held down alt and been tapping it when zombies are close and all i've ever gotten is chunks of flesh ripped out of me. Is there some sort of nuance to this or does it just not like being used?

I know the skill says to use it when enemies are "charging" at you. I haven't really tried using it yet, but I'd assume they would have to be running at you to use their momentum against them possibly? So maybe it doesn't work for basic zombies.

In addition to pressing the 'grapple' button (alt in your case), you need to input the direction you want to throw the zombie in. So alt+right/left/backwards. Let me know if it helped.

it's really useful against the human enemies. Just throw them as they charge and u able to get some attacks off without having to worry about getting countered or dodged.

Thanks for your input. I am having issues as well, however.

Is it more of a quick time event? Where you need to press both keys at the same time, while the zombies are at a set distance? Most of the time I end up getting bit and don't even initiate the grapple.

It seems like having the ability tied into the mouse look command would greatly improve the experience. Similar to how you look around to jump from ledge to ledge; activating the grapple button plus a mouse movement in the direction you want to throw. This would be a great if possible.

I'm playing with a controller, so it may be a bit different, but a prompt comes on-screen whenever its possible to do it.
It seems you can do it from the instant they begin their attack (which looks animation-wise like they haven't even started yet) until well after the attack (i.e. dodge backward when the attack, walk back up to them, throw them with grapple.

Hope this helps a bit.

It helps since now I can do it once every 5ish times. The problem is that the way it is for me on the keyboard that grapple isn't terrible useful. The main idea is great since it let's you throw zombies into hazzards much easier, but unless you time it really well then you'll either wait till the last second and probably get munched on or somehow manage to throw the enemy onto the hazzard. Another option is to keep holding the direction you want to throw the zombie while he is nearby, but at that rate you are likely to hurt yourself on the hazzard. As for actual combat It's alright but not terrible useful.
I think a good change that could come on it would be if you could just hold alt and then an animation would play for a second that would prompt you to choose the direction you want to throw the zombie. If you don't press the direction in a time limit you'll be chomped on a bit. I think that would make grapple easier to use.

all you need to do is hold alt + your direction (left, right or backwards) till they come at you, OR react and do it as they come at you. It's not a QTE, and you don't have to PERFECTLY TIME IT. You just need to be holding a, s, or d and ALT at the same time when they're coming at you.
