How to grapple?
Seriously, I just got the grappling move, so I have a zambo try to grab me, then a ui flashes for a split second(literally) telling me to press like five buttons. I am probably just dumb, but I've tried about 10 times and all I get is this split second before they grab me. Please help.

I just beat that grapple challenge after I figured out 1) how to grapple consistently and 2) a good strategy/location to grapple the walkers into...

1) Grappling is not that difficult. hold down your grapple key (Alt by default) and rapidy press the direction you want to throw them... do not hold down that direction key, rapidly press it. So again, hold down the grapple key (Alt by default) and rapidly press the direction you want to throw them when they walk into range.

2) I found the best strategy for completing that challenge was to immediately get to the back of the building they start you out on... either go through the window immediately behind you or jump to the roof. When you're at the back, looking down at the backyard, you'll see just to the left, a very small, 3/4 fenced-in area with spikes at the end. Go to those spikes! Get right in front of those spikes facing away from them towards the street (which you won't see because the building is in the way - I'm just trying to orient you). Then, as zombies approach, grapple them into the spikes BEHIND YOU by holding down that grapple key (Alt by default) and rapidly pressing the S key to fling them behind you directly into the spikes. This technique works extremely well! The small area of fence directly around you will keep them from attacking you from the sides and back. If you run out of zombies, simply throw firecrackers five feet in front of you and that will bring them around from the street to the back of the house where you're waiting to grapple them.

I ended up finishing the challenge with 100% health with about 40 seconds left since it was so easy once I figured this location/strategy out.

Then, after you collect the reward, immediately go back to that location and pick up all the loot packages the dead walkers dropped.

Hope this helps!

Assuming you've unlocked it in your skill tree you press whatever button/key you have mapped to grapple while also pressing whatever direction you want to toss the zombie in.

I got huge issues grappling as well. It simply does not work most of the time.. managed 2 grapples in 10 hours, lol.
I was confused at first as well (probably due to not being able to see text in the rift because it hasn't been optimised yet) but I think your supposed to press the buttons on reaction since a zombie attacked and then buttons popped up. I have no idea why they took out proper oculus support, i find it weird.

I had written up a longer post about how this has never worked right for me, but right after posting it, it finally worked as described... Only twice out of about 50 tries since the original version of this message, but it has worked. Before it never seemed to work and I still think something is way off in the way grapple works, like it requires perfect timing within a 10th of a second, which is ridiculous... Don't think I'll ever accomplish the 2nd Psycho challenge because I can't kick them and bull rush them into spikes fast enough and the grapple barely works. Best I've done in about 25 tries is 9/15 and that involved standing on a car and just kicking them into the spikes as they tried to climb the car to get me.

Hmm it works for me without issues. You can grapple zombies way before the hint pops up, basically as soon as they start moving towards you. When they reach in to bite you it's usually too late.

Yeah, Siu, that's what I found out, just wait till you see them start to move at you. Even while they are just walking.

I also found that the timing is different for PC and PS4 version. It's actually more different to do grapple on PS4

I don't understand what's the point of pop up the hint if it's already too late.

I think part of the delay is that 'unfolding' animation the popup goes through. The game doesn't know to start flashing it up until the zombie's started the lunge, but the unfolding animation before the text appears is long enough to be a serious delay.

I've been having a bit of issue with this too. I manage to make it work like 5 times out of 10, which is nowhere reliable enough.

For those who do use it well on PC, do you happen to know if the order in which you press the buttons change anything? Like if can hold ALT and then press the direction keys, or press the direciton keys before ALT, or even having to press both at the same time?

I have to press them fairly close together, the action key, then the direction key, it seems like it's at the same time, but the action key is like a split second before the direction (toss). This is for grappling by hand, btw. I haven't gotten the actual grappling hook yet, but I think they're the same basic setup.

You cannot use it repeatedly at will. It is on a timer. You have limited uses every few seconds.

After the first use you will notice it building back up. You can get two uses in about 3 seconds and it will take a few seconds to recharge completely before you can use it again.

There is also a limit on the range. It took me awhile to get the hang of it but I am almost starting to grapple from roof to roof.

You'll get the hang of it eventually, or you won't.

Thanks, I'll try that out.

We're talking about the grapple move, mate, not the grappling hook. =)

Said the guy who can't even use the grappling hook. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about -- move along, buddy.
