Sorry if I get in like a thief in the topic.
The other elements from the difficulty, are what you will have to watch out, like the progressive (not instantaneous) healing, not infinite combat stamina and specials zombies not appearing on the minimap. Also, the game pauses when you're on the menu, which is not the case, on hard and nightmare difficulties.
That being said and straight to the point; if you don't like sponginess at all, you should probably play on normal.
However, if wanna any challenge, especially later in the game, you should play like me, firstly on hard. That way, aside from really being able to spot a solid difference from when you create and use a powerful weapon to when you don't, you will have things like vendors/shops which DO NOT sell any ammunition, so you will have to plan its use well, a flashlight which starts dimming the longer you use it and, like I said in the previous post, the game doesn't pause during inventory management.
Also, the nightmare difficulty came later, so I consider it not the best approach, for when you're playing for the first time, and especially when you're handicapping yourself like that, unless you want something trully hardcore.
Of course in every realm one creates also in real world one can justify things in one's own way and there are infinite ways.
But if we come to an agreement batteries do go down, that zombies have not the highest supernatural resistance to hits, not skin and wounds auto healing especially if hit to some (I don't know the lore of the game) but vital points, if we agree that some stuff can and can't be done, and ... "why sellers should not have ammo?".. well maybe because there aren't anymore nor tools to produce makeshift alternatives ...
then that is what I mean for thoughtful immersion.
I am not looking for replaying a game, I have tons of things to do, I do one perfect ride, that is why I need the most information without any spoiler and then I take decisions and do it, mods or not mods, settings or console edits if game allows and there you go the perfect immersive game.
Challenge for me is not in terms of arcade.
I look for an immersion studied creation that, sure is personal taste but could be appreciated also from others that love thoughtful immersion.
Some force you in third person, let's say "the witcher".. still Iwant to play it with no HUD or other house rules can be imposed on games so to create that specific immersion.
