Maybe stupid question -- How to type messages in coop?

I was just in a DL coop for the first time. Someone typed a message and I had no clue how to respond. I don't mean I didn't know what to say but rather didn't know HOW to type the response to make it visible.

How do you type messages for other DL coop players?

^ Yep, that's it. And Num Enter does not work, either ... only the standard Enter key. This wasn't obvious. Thank you!

I have the same problem
I use the game pad to play and the keyboard is not accessible to me

So how can I press enter to get to chat

To talk to your allies (in PvP aka Be the Zombie) instead of everyone, hold shift and then press enter. But whatsoever, press enter to chat
