The weird upshot of this is that a gun you find early on may be better than anything else available for the rest of the game. You can also force the game to use the original stat curve via an exploit where you turn in care packages while next to a vendor that has guns in their inventory. As long as you don't reload the area, the guns they sell will have vastly higher stats than they could normally achieve in game.
At any rate, if you're pretty early on in the game I'd be cautious about selling any guns you find; it's actually quite possible to find ones far better than the golden weapons (and they look better too).
