Might be a bug with the game.
Are you running with v-sync on, or maybe with a Nvidia GPU by any chance?
It could be. If I use v-sync it will limit the frames to 60, and when I alt+tab out and back into the game it will change the limitation to 120. Yeah I use an Nvidia GPU, and this occurs whether I use DL's v-sync or the v-sync in the Nvidia Control Panel.
If I do a fresh start of DL without v-sync it pumps out the maximum amount of frames possible (130+) but I can tell it's only utilizing a 60hz refresh rate. If I use a framerate limiter and set it to "120" with no v-sync I get terrible screen tearing. However, if I alt+tab out and back into the game - reminding DL that my system is running at 120hz - the screen tearing decreases and is only minor!
I also have the screen tearing with v-sync off, but alt tabbing fixes the worst of it.
Might be a bug with the game, because it's still there after the latest update.
And no I didn't say that,I said you have no reason to want 120 FPS in dying light.
The biggest factor with anything related to timing and rates on screens, is the lag between the input and when the screen projects your actions.
On newer systems, this is well below 5ms, but you only have to go back a few years, and the actual time from when you pressed a key, and something happened on the screen, was above 10ms, despite most monitors having a response time of below 5ms for almost 10 years.
If you're wondering, sight is slower than feeling, so if you feel the button mechanism in the mouse and it takes more than 10ms for something to happen on screen, you'll be able to see it.
This is what most people think refresh rate is about, when in reality it isnt.
TL:DR
Your brain cant tell the difference between 60hz/fps and 120hz/fps on a monitor/screen.
There is no "default" refresh rate for games on PC, because PC users have the ability to turn OFF v-sync, whereas console gamers cant for obvious reasons.
Most monitors that can run 120/144hz are 1ms, with 60hz monitors some games you get tearing or shearing, but with 120/144hz their is none, this fact alone proves its better for the eyes and game playing, I have used computers for many many years and I would rather play on a 120/144hz monitor then a 60hz, but if your happy with your 60hz monitor fine, enjoy
You know what's funny? You say 60 fps is the default refresh rate for gaming, and it is, but more and more often, for a lot of console games/ports, you'll see ♥♥♥♥ like 30 fps caps, or on the other side of the fence, developers CONSTANTLY trying to sell 60 fps as if it's some godly number when, in fact, that's becoming no longer the case.
Bru741iX, unless you got slammed in the eye socket with a baseball, it's not at all impossible to see the difference between 60 and 120 hz, as well as 60 and 120 fps.
Granted, it's variable for all sorts of people, and that's the beautiful testament to just how different people can be, but claiming that it's impossible like that is absolute malarky. There are tests, so many tests, that can very clearly show you the difference between marks like 30, 60, 120 fps which can be tested across different refresh rates. Seriously, use Google. Hell, I can test and see the difference right now with my 120 hz monitor by switching back to 60 hz, dragging my Steam window in a circle and see the difference in the fluidity of the motion. It's gone, it's no longer so smooth and straining on the eyes. There so much more obvious tearing and such. I can perfectly read this wall of text I made if I'm moving the window left and right with the refresh rate at 120hz, but I cannot at 60hz as it becomes too blurry.
OP, I haven't got much of a fix for you, since you've already tried forcing the option in Nvidia control panel, so I'd suggest sticking to your work around for now. Perhaps if you email Techland sometime and bringing this issue up, they'll get to fixing it in the next patch.
Well said
