Ties that Bind quest (volatile nest?)

I don't know if they volatile nests are randomized or anything, but this Ties that Bind quest that's tasking me with clearing out a tunnel has a volatile nest in it and I didn't really heed the "You should be level 12" warning when I started The Following, just jumped right in at level 2. If this nest is supposed to be here and there's no nifty trick to killing them I'm gonna have to go replay the main campaign in order to get levelled up enough to clear the volatiles.

I guess my real question here is 1: Are the volatiles supposed to be there? 2: Is there an easy-ish way to kill them given I'm a pretty low level (I've tried crossbow and UV light, neither of which seem to do all that much.)

If you go in at night there shouldn't be any Volatiles in there.

I was literally in the middle of trying that because I remembered it saying something about avoiding nests in daylight. Thanks mate.

That's not true of all of them I found though. There's two near each other that are in a tunnel full of military vehicles, and they were both swarming with volatiles at night. I died 3 times from them.

for anyone stuck in this quest you can kill them easily with a shotgun.
