one thing works, though, turn your back. they cant grab you from behind. :)
I would like to grabbed from behind :)
No but jokes aside, either improving the grapple skill or the instant escape skill in the perk tree should help. Instant escape kind of makes it easier since it's just with the press of a button and further improvements lead to a stun after the escape. In fact instant escape lets you preemptively push the zombie back before it even starts biting you.
the grab skills only lets you escape faster, do not prevent it.
the spacebar maneuver is very useful.
i use fast, bladed weapon and aim for the head. it cuts them in one hit. it is important, to change to a higher damage weapon, as the zombies get tougher, as the game progresses.
basic kick is useful, but not much against many. it hits just 1(or in a tight arc), while the weapon hits all, in a large arc.
this grabbing is actually one of the cool things, of the game. its very interactive and feels realistic. do not hate it.
the issue is the bad perspective, which makes things appear odd, like they grab you from a mile away.
... i was going to record a video for something else, but something happened.
in the video, it turned out, you can see a way, to not get grabbed
