How do Volatiles breed? What’s a volatiles nest?
I’m so confused. What’s the deal with volatiles? Why nobody asked such questions?

There are large plies of bones and flesh and pools of red liquid in volatiles hives. What are those things? Since volatiles have nests, so can they breed? How? Volatiles were not mutated from zombies but were given birth by a nest? What are those bones flesh and blood for? They can create life from dead meat?

In the mission “Two roads diverged” what happened to Sabit? Dose He become a nest? How can a person become a nest? Why he can still talk? Do volatiles kidnap humans to turn them into a nest like the xenomorphs?

The biology of volatiles should be better explained. I want to know what’s in the developer’s mind about volatiles.

yes, voltiles use humans as nests, and voltiles are also trying to become the dominant race, said by some doctor in a note

Don't expect it to make much sense or have much explanation. For the most part I consider Volatile Hives/Nests as just a gameplay feature for another dimension of challenge.

I think the developer has something in mind. Clearly they know their own creation and they design the game as it is. They just didn't put the explaination in the game.

I never said there wasn't some sort of explanation. I meant that it's not necessarily going to be very fleshed out or make a lot of sense. Just the fact that they didn't put it in the game probably means it sounded kinda weak to them.

Another question, why do night hunter victims explode after being pounced? When the hunter pounces someone, the person starts screaming and then the hunter rips the throat out of the human and jumps of and the human explodes right after

When a daddy volatile and a mommy volatile love each other very much they have "Intercourse" which plants the seed for a new volatile, or in other words they are what made you.

But no seriously I don't think they ever explain it, not that they need to but yeah it would have been nice.

It's been 8 years so I don't think it really matters but I'll give my answer anyway. When an Infected (most likely a Viral but perhaps also a Nightwalker) manages to stay away from UV lights or Sunlight for a long period of time, they'll retreat into a hive which is composed of human remains in order to mutate into a Volatile. I think it also depends upon the genes of the Infected before they turned otherwise they would have become a Demolisher for example. Nests also provide food and cover for the infected, which means they don't need to hunt while they mutate. The process also (from we've seen in the countryside) leaves the-soon-to-be Volatile vulnerable. Hives provide protection from sunlight and from other potential threats (humans, wild animals and the elements) because the-soon-to-be Volatile is surrounded by other infected as well.

Awesome post. This is something I wondered about myself. As I played through Dying LIght: The Following, I kept hoping the game would expound more on how volatiles come to be. The Sabit side mission would've been the perfect time to find out how they are made since he could still talk. I haven't played Dying Light 2 yet, so I'm not sure if there's more lore introduced, or not.

In the Following was one Volatile in its nest (below a hut with a broken floor) that still was speaking. Mostly gibberish and painful groans, but it leads away from the idea with the infected or Virals that stay away for too long from daylight and turn into Volatiles.
How about Night Hunters? I believe they are the dominant creatures in this game. More dangerous and deadly compared with volatiles.
