Inspiration from I Am Legend (2007)?

So I just watched I Am Legend, and certain aspects felt very familiar. Does Dying Light have some inspiration from that movie?

Well most of it goes back to the infected. I don't think they invented the Superzombie that sprints around, but it was the first time I've seen it in a movie.
The "vampire" like aversion to daylight was also reminisicient of Volatiles and the Nighthunter. The screams sounded similar and their faces felt sort of alike.

Going into Dying Light 2, the trailer didn't show any zombies in the streets, instead very decomposed zombies, almost like "Hibernating" in the darkness of the indoors. Again, there was a Scene in I Am Legend like this.


Many of these may be Zombie movie / game tropes and just used by both, but I can't help the feeling that someone watched that and thought they would like to follow up on this... What do you think?

I thought that when I saw the trailer and quick look at the nightime beastie. Hmmm that looks like the infected from I am Legend.

There are some good infected/zombie type films out there.

28 days/weeks later: infected with rage, interesting concept.

I am Legend: already mentioned.

Resident Evil series: lots of material there, even infected dogs and, at the end flying beasties.

Daylights end: nightime beasties as well with the added alpha infected

Old films like dawn of the dead, evil dead and maybe The Walking dead

Just a few.

Tbh I haven't seen an awful lot of Zombie material.

Shaun of the dead is GREAT, no question about it, Zombieland is awesome too.
I think I Am Legend is very good with big flaws.
Other than that I only really remember World War Z, which I really, really liked, although that seems to be opposite to the internet's opinion.

I've been wanting to check out 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, but I never really get around to it.

As for Resident Evil, I've never seen any of those movies, didn't even know they were a thing.
Daylights End sounds interesting.

The gameplay trailer started out with him jumping out of a window, leaving a building with zombies inside.

I think so. When Gosia Mitrega, one of the DL 2 producers, was asked if the 2007 I Am Legend movie was an influence on DL 2, she stated in this PCGamesN interview;

“It's not a coincidence,” producer Gosia Mitrega tells us. “We wanted to show that there are places like this.”

I kind of think that the movie was also an influence on DL. As stated in the thread, the look of the Volatiles is similar to the creatures in IAL, and even to complete leveling up, you earn "Legend" points. So I think it definitely had an impact. Heck they even kill a dog in each.

That aside, the top of my list of zombie movies includes;

Yes. This also happens in the short story that the film is based on, Richard Matheson's I Am Legend.

I reccomend " Train to Busan ". just saw it recently - pretty cool.

Loved both 28's and WWZ. The one commonality between the best zombie films is that the Zeds are all super fast and hyper aggressive like DL's Virals.

Actually there's two types of vampires in the original story. Some that act mindlessly like zombies, and another group, that are as normal as humans. Both types can die if exposed to the sun, and both need blood to survive.

Additionally, the short story is really, really good. If you're a fan of horror/science fiction, and you've never read any of Richard Matheson's stories, I Am Legend is a great one to start with.

It's such a good short story that there's been several movies made based on it. The first one, The Last Man on Earth[www.imdb.com], is closest to Matheson's short story, probably because he was one of the screenwriters. The second, The Omega Man[www.imdb.com] with Charlton Heston, was so far from the original story that supposedly Matheson didn't even care. The third was the straight to DVD, I Am Omega[www.imdb.com], and the fourth, released the same year, was I Am Legend[www.imdb.com], with Will Smith.
