As stationed above, just open your matchmaking menu and then you'll be able to join, you can also select friend that's playing the game in the steam menu (shift+tab by default) and just select "join *nickname*"
Joining:
1. Menu > Matchmaking - this will show matches based on your current difficulty, story % and region / availability based on ping and other filters. Note that Dying Light has NAT issues, significantly reducing number of matches you see in Matchmaking. You may not even see 1 session, don't be surprised. There are actually a lot of players playing Dying Light which you would normally be able to join but you don't see it because of NAT.
Note that in case of not being able to see enough sessions to join in Matchmaking, remember that there is way to get around it. What you can do is change difficulty from Main Menu > Play > Campaign > Save > Advanced (Having Bozak, Prison or DLC quarantine zone tracked will hide difficulty options). As well as toggle VAC option in Menu > Options > Online.
Normal mode VAC on
Normal mode VAC off
Hard mode VAC on
Hard mode VAC off
Nightmare mode VAC on
Nightmare mode VAC off
All 6 instances will show different matches in Matchmaking. You can always switch to find more sessions to join.
2. You can always join friends by right clicking their name in Steam chat window and selecting Join Game, as long as their session is set open to Public or Friends Only at least and have free slots.
3. You can also join people who aren't your friends by opening their Steam profile and selecting Join Game, but same conditions apply - their session must be available. If it's set to Singleplayer obviously you can't join.
Starting:
1. Easiest way to start Co-op session is simply opening Menu > Options > Online > Game Mode - set this to Public or Friends Only. While doing so, make sure that you close menu and go back to your game as this is when selected options apply. Afterwards all you have to do is wait.
Note, by default it's enabled, but make sure that Allow Human Co-ops option in Online settings is set to Yes. If it's set to No then people can't join you as Crane, only invade you as Night unter.
The Allow Human Co-ops setting is mainly used to disable it for invasions where if you want to play alone or with certain people, let's say 2vs1 against Night Hunter, you disable Allow Human Co-ops so other survivor players can't join you and you safely play 2vs1 against Night Hunter for example.
Note that NAT settings may hinder your session from appearing to other players, therefore you can wait for hours and have nobody join you - this varies on each individual player, people have different experience with this.
2. You can invite friends! Open your Steam Overlay (Default Shift + Tab) while in game and open chat, I think chat opens by default anyways. Steam will now easily filter players based on what they are playing. So you can find Dying Light category and everyone playing it, right click and send invitation, I suggest asking them first before dropping an invite from out of nowhere - unless you are friends then you can annoy them all you want with thousand invites per day - but I wouldn't suggest that.
Note if you don't have many friends playing Dying Light and you want to find them without relying on in game Matchmaking, you can always start thread here asking for Co-op mates or join Dying Light's main Discord server. https://discord.gg/Mph8RTg
